Work for Tesco or Work in the Mountains?

Wednesday, 22 February 2012 15:24 Published in Industry News

Career Choices

Do you want to work for free at Tesco? Or do you want the chance to live your dreams and become a ski instructor or a demon on a snowboard?

With the increased cost of a University education and Tesco using the unemployed claiming Job Seekers Allowance to fill their shelves, it is time for the youth of today to think about and question the traditional pathways to a career.

Are there other ways to obtain qualifications and skills?

With the Winter Sports Company there are two avenues to entering the adventure or snow sport industry.

We offer genuine paid internships for an investment of under £4k, half the cost of one year’s university fees, and we provide some of Canada’s best ski instructor training courses and snowboard instructor training courses, lasting between 4 and 11 weeks.

Working out of the Monashee mountains in Canada we coach our clients to attain internationally recognised qualifications and then assist them in finding work in the industry not only for the season in which they learn but in subsequent seasons.

Career Development

Do you really want to learn how to push trolleys around Tesco’s car park when you could be gaining the techniques of riding the powder on the slopes of Sun Peaks Resort? Why gain customer service experience showing people where to find their baked beans when you can be learning to guide fellow skiers or boarders around the mountains?

Career Investment

A ski instructor course or snowboard instructor course provides life skills, teaching skills, sets physical and mental challenges. Learning to become a snowboard or ski instructor opens up a world of opportunity and not just in the sport you love.

So make your own choices. Give us a call for help and advice on how to become a ski instructor or a snowboarding instructor.

Redundancy - What are your options?

Sunday, 22 January 2012 00:02 Published in Ski News

Wondering what to do now you have been made redundant?

Take time out to do something for yourself and learn to be a ski or snowboard instructor.

Four and eleven week courses in Canada are just the tonic needed to inspire you to either step off the hamster wheel and live the dream on the slopes, or give you space to decide on where you go from here.

If you genuinely want to become a ski or snowboard instructor we can show you how to find and manage your opportunities. We currently have three past clients working in Japan for the season, many more in Canada and some teaching the odd week or two in Europe.

If you just want to become a better skier or boarder then enjoying a season on the slopes learning from top instructors is the best way to improve fast and for ever. Challenge yourself to taking Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications for the Canadian internationally recognised certification and find your real potential.

These courses are not for the ‘best’ or the ‘fastest’ skiers or snowboarders. These courses are for all those who love the sport, love working with people and want to help others to enjoy it too.

Don’t sit at home worrying about your future. Go out and make a new one.

The Secret of Good Steering

Thursday, 24 November 2011 09:52 Published in Ski/SnB Tips

Inclination, Angulation and Edging

Good Steering exampleEdging is an integral part of steering skills. It consists of combining inclination and angulation movements at the beginning of the turn as well as steering the ski tips progressively in relation to the radius, the speed, and the terrain. Therefore, in order to steer the skis efficiently according to the environment, the skier must progressively increase or release the edges. The legs must be pivoted simultaneously and moved laterally to change the edging angle throughout the turn. It is important that the skier keeps moving all the time.

An excellent strategy used to improve a skier showing a static position consists of having him/her execute round turns, with a hip-width stance, while skiing down a 4-meter wide corridor. In order to be able to link the turns in the corridor and to control the speed, the skier will need to use progressive movements to be able to steer the skis efficiently. By using adequate tactics and exercises, your students will discover new feelings and they will increase their confidence to ski on more difficult and varied terrain.

Choosing a Ski Instructor Course or Snowboard Instructor Course

Saturday, 11 February 2012 15:23 Published in Snowboard News

New Career – GAP Year or Career Break

Have you ever contemplated a few of the real dream careers out there? Becoming a ski or  snowboard instructor is probably close to the surface of most people’s list of potential dream jobs. What can beat spending your day on the slopes, with “like minded” people teaching the sport you love?

If you already ski or snowboard, then becoming a ski instructor or snowboard instructor might be easier than you imagine. All it requires to turn your passion into a reality is a snowboard instructor training course or a ski instructor training course. In this article, we look at the things you should consider before investing in a snowboard or ski instructor training course.

Choosing - Which Ski Instructor Course – Which Snowboard Instructor Course

The price of a ski Instructor Training Course or Snowboard Instructor Training Course has to be seriously considered so it must be the first and last thing you look at when selecting the right company. This article explains what to look out for and how to make your decision once you have decided to invest in your career, GAP Year or career break.

Location

When you choose a ski or snowboard instructor training course, you may have a country or location in mind. This may determine the type of qualification you are able to attain. Look for companies who are committed to one resort. Companies with several resorts to choose from often point you towards their quietest, or cancel your chosen resort if they don’t receive enough bookings for it.

Select a resort which will suit your individual needs and with suitable terrain. Remember you are there for 3 months so make sure the area is large enough.

Ski in – Ski out Resorts

Always choose a resort where you can ski or snowboard from the hotel door. You DO NOT want to have to travel to the slopes on a bus every day. Bus journeys to the slopes make the days long and tiring. If you miss the bus you miss your training or face expensive taxi fares. It also stops you from training at weekends as you become fed up with the long journeys.

Your Security

Always select a company who provide flights and have the correct licenses to operate. ATOL registered companies are “secure” and any investment you make with them is assured through their ATOL membership.

Qualifications

When you choose a snowboard instructor course or a ski instructor course you need to be thinking about the form of license you are going to attain at the end of the programme. You want to know that at the end of the training course, you will receive an international qualification, which allows you to work anywhere in the world.

The Canadian CSIA for ski and CASI for snowboard qualifications are recognised as one of the best in the world, and there are several companies who can provide you with the training you require.

The Instructors

When you choose a ski instructor training course or snowboard instructor training course, you need to be sure that the individuals who are providing your training are highly qualified professionals. Seek out companies who provide courses that are run and provided by ski or snowboard instructors, and with people who have a real sporting knowledge in the skiing and snowboarding industry.

Food and Accommodation

Remember you are living in the accommodation for up to 12 weeks so make sure you are going to be comfortable.  You also want feeding everyday so check out how many days your meals will be provided.

Several companies may appear to be cheaper, but when you read the finer details you will find that breakfast and evening meals are only served 4 or 5 days per week. The other days you are left to your own devices and paying for your own food in resort is very expensive.

The Career Possibilities

Some people do a ski instructor course or snowboard instructor course to simply improve their skills or for the fun of it. Some are taking a gap year and some are seriously looking at starting career in winter sports instruction.

Once qualified you can use your newly acquired qualification to teach either part time or full time, but make sure the company you invest with are prepared to assist you in finding work afterwards. Check out each companies “Employment Section”. If they don’t have one, disregard them straight away.

Good training companies offer assistance with work placement after you have qualified, and some have work already arranged for their recently qualified instructors with either the snow school you have trained with, and/or with ski schools from around the world.                                                                         These are the companies you should seriously consider as they are well respected throughout the industry, simply because ski and snowboard schools obviously have great faith in the instructors they are providing.

Evaluate

Always check out the companies “All Inclusive” page to ensure they tick all the right boxes.

Whether you are starting a new career, taking a GAP year, or having a career break, and you evaluate any possible snowboard or ski instructor courses according to these principles, you should find that you get exactly what you are looking for.
