Should I wear a helmet for skiing and snowboarding?

Helmets can be very comfortable.

Should helmets be compulsory?

In 2011 the NHS reported that current studies on the benefits of wearing a helmet whilst skiing or snowboarding, some which conclude wearing a helmet can reduce head injuries by 35% in adults and 59% in children, have several shortcomings. These include a lack of sampling of control groups, an unclear definition of what actually constitutes a head injury and no considerationn of the actual fit of a helmet.

Should we wear a helmet and what do we gain?

The NHS maintain the actual risk of head injury for skiers and snowboarders is relatively low.

Only 1 in 11,000 ski or snowboard outings result in a head injury, and serious head injuries causing fatalities are extremely rare.

Helmets are most effective if collisions happen at speeds below 15mph. As we all know, the majority of intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders regularly travel at speeds much faster, which increases their risk.

So what are the benefits of a helmet?

Most regular helmet wearers describe higher levels of comfort. Helmets unlike woolly hats don’t itch. They don’t soak up moisture and are warm when it’s cold, and cool when it’s hot.

Some claim that once you wear a helmet you will never go back to the beanie. New styles and designs of helmets have also made them more fashionable, and in some European and American resorts studies have shown helmet wearing has increased to 80% of those enjoying winter sports.

If you are considering a ski or snowboard instructor training course, you will find most candidates purchase a helmet.

When teaching it is always better to lead by example, especially to children for whom it may be compulsory to wear a helmet.

When are helmets mandatory?

Snowboarders have to be aware that the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors, (who certify and test those wishing to become a qualified, internationally recognised instructor), have made helmets mandatory for their Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 course exams.

If you want to teach in the snow park, helmets are mandatory for both skiers and snowboarders.

What do you lose by wearing a helmet?

Some argue helmets may impair vision and hearing and that they may encourage people to take greater risks. There is also a cost factor to consider – prices start at around £45.00, but then you have to ask – How much is my head worth?

If you decide to invest in a helmet you must ensure it fits well to give maximum comfort and protection. Measure the circumference of your head from just above your eyebrows and roughly follow the sizing chart below:-

Small 42 – 55.5 cm. Medium 55.5 – 59 cm. Large 59 – 62.5 cm. Extra Large 62.5 – 65 cm.

A helmet needs to fit snugly with very little movement inside when you move your head. Be wary of a helmet that is too tight as it will be uncomfortable. When trying a helmet out wear it for several minutes in the shop to get a true sense of its fit. The ear pads inside should be in line with your ears and if you use goggles take them along and wear them with the helmet as they can also effect the fit.

Ski / Snowboard Instructor - FAQ's

We have collected together a list of the most important questions for potential ski / snow instructors, please click a question to see more information:

What qualifications can I expect to get?

The qualifications you are working towards are:-

  • CSIA - Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance. (level 1 with level 2 optional)
  • CASI - Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors. (level 1 with level 2 optional)
  • CADS - Canadian Association of Disabled Skiers (for Skiers and Snowboarders)

With additional training included (optional)

  • Equipment tuning
  • Racing
  • Freestyle
  • Off piste/chutes/steeps
  • Moguls
  • Deep powder

Are the qualifications recognised internationally?

Yes. We have clients who have worked all over the world including the Southern hemisphere countries of New Zealand, Australia and Chile.

In the Northern hemisphere we have clients who are working as far away as Japan, and as close as Scotland. Many have taken work in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Andora, Norway, Spain and of course several have gone back to work at one of the many resorts within Canada and the USA. Some clients complete our training programmes in April, and are working in the Southern hemisphere two months later in June.

What standard do I need to be?

Ideally you should be at least a low intermediate or better. i.e. be able to link turns down a blue run and not fazed on red runs, but we have had clients who have not had any experience at all who have passed Level l during the 11 week programme.

What is the age limit?

The minimum age for our courses is 16. There is no maximum age. If you feel fit enough then go for it. The oldest person we have trained (and passed) is 63.

What equipment do I need to bring with me?

You should own all of your own equipment including soft goods such as hats, gloves, thermals, trousers and jackets etc.

If you are buying new skis or a snowboard it is important to discuss the specification of it with us first, as there is certain criteria required that will help you during the course. It is possible to buy all of the equipment you require in the resort, and should you need any help we will be there to advise you accordingly.

How much money will I need to bring?

Other than the money for equipment purchases, you will need approximately £100 per week to buy lunches and any other evening entertainment you require.

What is the food like?

We proudly boast to provide the best and most varied food than any other instructor training company.

You will have a selection of meals available at 3 or 4 different restaurants every day throughout the duration of the whole instructor training programme. No other company provide you with as many options.

What if I have special dietary requirements?

All reasonable dietary needs are met, and the proprietors of the restaurants will be happy to discuss your dietary requirements personally.

What Is the nightlife like?

There are plenty of opportunities to party and many bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from including the local night club.

Sun Peaks Resort is not far away from the vibrant city of Kamloops (where many of the resort workers live and commute from every day). It is not uncommon to travel down to the city for some evening entertainment, such as hockey games, cinema, shopping malls, bars and night clubs etc.
