Front 9 Good to Go!

With the snow melting relatively quickly this spring, the Golf Course is looking great! The front 9 holes are clear, cut, and ready for play. The back 9, well we are at over 1200 metres above sea level, after all. Our passionate Superintendent Keith Lyall took a few photos on May 9, 2012, to show you how things are coming along.

New Additions to Sun Peaks' Packed Summer

Suggested Tweet: It’s #FullyLoaded this summer @SunPeaksResort Check out all the events here http://ow.ly/a/QWev
Sun Peaks, BC – Sun Peaks is excited to announce additions to its already massive event schedule this summer. This coming summer will feature over 35 events, including 15 newly created or partnered events, representing a 100% increase over last year. Branded as Canada’s Alpine Village, the mountain community will host an event every weekend from June 30 to September 29, drawing visitors from all over the region.
In addition to previously announced events, such as the upcoming Free Outdoor Concert featuring Kevin Costner and Modern West, Sun Peaks is adding to its summer line up “Seak the Peak” Geo Caching Weekend (July 21 & 22), the brand new 5’Forty Longboard Challenge (August 19) and the Yeah Bru! Classic Dual Slalom Downhill Mountain Bike Race (September 2).

The community will continue to celebrate its 50 year anniversary throughout the summer with events happening every month, starting with the Mr. Fairway Contest (June 2) and culminating at the 50th Reunion Finale Barbeque (September 8).
The increased events schedule allowed Tourism Sun Peaks and resort businesses to partner with talented local organisers to identify opportunities.  Partnerships were forged to stage the Yeah Bro! BC Cup Series #3 Downhill Mountain Bike Race (July 14 & 15), Dirty Feet’s XC Mountain Bike Event (July 21 & 22) and Trail Run (September 8).  Cooperation also expanded RunClub’s Jo’s Road Race (June 30 & July 1) into a destination weekend.
The dramatic increase in events has been driven by two factors according to Christopher Nicolson, President of Tourism Sun Peaks. The first was a need to attract more ‘first-time’ locals and regional residents during the summer.

“Events offer a specific reason to come to Sun Peaks,” says Nicolson. “Most people who visit in summer have an exceptional experience and return. The scented air, vibrant colours, and invigorating village and activity draw people back. But we needed to find a way to entice guests for their initial visit.”
The second reason is directly related to the creation of the new Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality.  As a formal municipality, the community was able to work with the provincial government and secure new investment for tourism and infrastructure.

Local Elli Terwiel Named to 2012-13 Canadian Alpine Ski Team

Suggested Tweet: Local @SunPeaksResort ski racer Elli Terwiel named to @Alpine_Canada 2012-13 Canadian Alpine Ski Team
Sun Peaks, BC – The community of Sun Peaks is congratulating local ski racer Elli Terwiel who was named to the 2012-2013 Canadian Alpine Ski Team yesterday.
Terwiel, last year’s Overall Ladies NorAm Cup Slalom Champion, will join the team of 10 women and 19 men as they work towards podium finishes in the 2012-13 World Cup season and the 2013 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.
Coming from a Sun Peaks family background of ski instructing and coaching, as well as local entrepreneurship, being goal oriented comes naturally to the young athlete.

“My family has allowed me to always be motivated to go outside and get the work done,” she says. “They taught me if you want to get it done, you have to put in the work to achieve it.”
Being a part of the national team will create a successful environment for the athlete, where she will have access to financial funding and athletic support in the form of ski technicians, physiotherapists and other important tools for high level athletes.
Terwiel says she also enjoys the support of the other Women’s Team members who are all working with long term Olympic goals in mind.
“My goal is absolutely, 100 per cent to go to the 2014 Winter Games,” says Terwiel. “And right now, it feels very achievable.”
Currently riding a crest of success from finishing her first year of civil engineering final exams at the University of Vermont where she resides on an athletic scholarship, the student says she will return to campus in September but may take 2014 off to focus completely on her Olympic goals.
Terweil says living in Sun Peaks was motivational and she appreciates the support of the community throughout her journey. From early financial contributions to letting her know she was doing something worthwhile, Terwiel contributes a large part of her success to the residents of Sun Peaks.
“And it just goes to show anyone can do this if they put in the work,” she says.
