I attended a course at Sun Peaks Resort, Canada in January 2014. Whilst there I trained to be a CASI Level 1 & 2 instructor and had the opportunity to add in Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 and CASI Park Level 1 courses so came away with a good set of skills. Great value for money when you take into account the cost of lift passes, accommodation and food etc which were all fantastic. It’s the best way to start a day going to The Cahilty for bacon and pancakes to give you the energy needed for the day ahead.
The instructors at Sun Peaks were first class with an amazing pass rate, plus they’re all really friendly and it felt like we were training with the Jedi of snowboarding! Five full days of intense training per week with early starts, but being a ski-in-ski-out resort you get a bit longer to lie-in after a good night out. It’s definitely not a walk in the park and you will be tired physically and mentally throughout, but it’s not a problem because you get to spend the days with great people snowboarding or skiing every day. What more could you ask for?
After a long week of training you get weekends to spend however you choose, which for most of us was spent boarding or skiing in big groups, however, the odd day of recovering from a night out watching movies was still a great way to spend the time. Other activities we could take part in were trips to Kamloops to see the ice hockey and watch the Blazers lose or to do a bit of shopping. We also had a chance to play ice hockey ourselves in resort a few times which I’m still sore from. Apart from the snowboarding every day, the best part was making life long friends with people on the course and the locals.
The Winter Sports Company have been fantastic help from booking the course right through to helping me find work after, especially as the company I originally booked with went into administration which worked out in my favour as the course the Winter Sports Company offer was far superior.
Steve and Karen were brilliant all the time we were in resort by being there for any queries or advice. Every time I have contacted them by phone or email they have been quick and happy to help.
If you have the money there is no question that you should go and have the best time ever!
