SBINZ Snowboard Qualifications
SBINZ offer a whole range of courses and qualifications, catering to every level of snowboard instructor, from those completely new to the industry through to the seasoned veterans.
SBINZ are responsible for all snowboard instructor training and certification in New Zealand. They are internationally renowned for producing professional and knowledgeable instructors.
Snowboard Instruction New Zealand’s prominent international relationships have helped them establish a qualification framework that caters for New Zealand’s environment, as well as preparing instructors to teach internationally.
This qualification framework is constantly evolving under the guidance of the SBINZ Committee. It is delivered by a highly professional examining body. The day-to-day management of these courses and qualifications is the responsibility of the Snowboard Course Director.

The Level One qualification is the entry level snowboard instructor’s course for people who want to start working within the winter sports industry.
This five day course includes modules that cover rider improvement, the teaching model, progression for level one and level two students, guest services, teaching children, class handling and safety.
The Level Two qualification is for snowboard instructors who want to progress within the snow sports industry to teaching students at a higher level.
The minimum requirement to sit the Level Two Cert is Snowboard Level One, or equivalent foreign qualification.
The Level Three snowboard qualification is aimed at instructors who want to progress further within the snow sports industry, teaching students in all mountain and terrain park situations.
The minimum requirement to sit the snowboard Level Three Cert is SBINZ Level Two or equivalent foreign qualifications plus a Children’s teaching Certification.
The Freestyle Course is for instructors who want to get involved with teaching freestyle in and out of the terrain park and half pipe. The freestyle components take the next step up from those contained in the Level Two snowboard instructor certification, and focus on park and pipe safety and etiquette.
The Certification is split into a 3 day workshop and then a 1 day exam later in the season.
The Avalanche Awareness Course is intended for snowboard and ski instructors wanting to expand their knowledge of an all mountain environment.
This qualification is required to achieve ISIA status, along with your NZSIA/SBINZ Level Three instructing qualification, and a second discipline.
This one day course is designed for SBINZ level two instructors who are working towards their Level Three. The day focuses on high level teaching, riding and analysis of intermediate to advanced snowboard students.
