After spending a season in Canada on one of our CSIA instructor courses, Elliot Russel decided he wanted to chase the winter, and so embarked on a journey to the southern hemisphere, where he signed up for our advanced course with the NZSIA. This is his experience.
Elliot Russell – “After spending a season in Canada with The Winter Sports Company, I decided to book onto their advanced course in New Zealand. I couldn’t believe how much I learnt in the first week of training. The trainers were at some of the highest levels in the Southern Hemisphere. The town was one of the most picturesque places I have ever been to, and waking up there every day was the best feeling.”
After spending a season in Canada with The Winter Sports Company, I decided to book their advanced course in New Zealand. I arrived two weeks early and was worried as the mountain did not have much snow, and only a couple of runs were open, but that soon changed after a couple of days of heavy snowfall!!
On the first day of training, we drove up the hill (which is a great time to catch up on some sleep or read some notes). When we arrived, all of the instructors were waiting and knew everybody’s names, so they called over the groups, and we started skiing straight away. I couldn’t believe how much I learned in the first week of training. The trainers were some of the highest qualified in the Southern Hemisphere with the NZSIA, which was incredibly inspiring, and I was thoroughly engaged in the day’s sessions.
New Zealand is one of the most picturesque places I have ever been to, and waking up there every day was the best feeling. There was so much to do in Queenstown and the surrounding areas. You definitely wouldn’t get bored. The restaurants were excellent, and there was a wide range of delicious food to choose from. The accommodation was excellent, and the rooms were big enough that you had your own space and didn’t feel confined. The owners were really friendly and did everything they could to make us most welcome. I came away from the course having learnt far more than I had expected to. I already had a job lined up for next season, but everyone else on the course who didn’t managed to secure one upon completion of the course.
