Heli-Skiing Holiday Review

Getting to Panorama
I want to say thank you to the Winter Sports Company for organising the fantastic Heli skiing experience in Panorama, British Columbia, Canada.
The logistics worked very well, flying from Heathrow to Calgary and then a very short wait for the transfer by minibus to Panorama. Travelling time is obviously a lot longer than a ski trip to Europe, but it is well worth it.
Impressions of the Village
The resort of Panorama is small but perfectly formed. I could step out of my room and be on the main chair lift in no more than 60 seconds. The cafe was also within stroll distance and was great to stop at each morning to set us up for slopes. With virtually no one else on the hill, I think the longest we waited in a lift line was when I needed to adjust my boots.
The environment at Panorama
Situated between the Purcell Mountains and the Rockies, the scenery was stunning. From the lifties to ski patrol, bar staff to instructors, everyone in Panorama was accommodating, polite, and happy to help. In contrast to the treatment you sometimes find in Europe.
Heli-Ski Preparation
The Heliskiing run by RK Heli-Ski was very well organised from the get-go. Before the trip, I received a welcome phone call asking if we could pop down to fill out all the necessary paperwork and fit skis to ensure we could maximise our ski time on the day.
Getting up in the Chopper
We started the experience with a good breakfast and safety briefing, followed by a helicopter briefing and equipment demos. The guides were friendly, informative and attentive. We then picked up our skis and poles and mounted the helicopter, soon greeted by the thump thump thump of the rotors as the engines started.
We took off and flew for around 20 minutes high into the surrounding mountains to find our first descent. We’d had about 20 inches of snow the night before, so the snow conditions were perfect. The following day also did not disappoint, we had clear blue skies, bright sunshine, and easily some of the best off-piste skiing I’ve ever done. It was terrific, with deep powder, long runs and huge smiles.
Itching to be back already!
If you’ve never done off-piste and always wanted to give it a go, I’d suggest giving Winter Sports a call; they can tailor a trip to your requirements. Getting to ski with the founder of Winter Sports, an excellent skier and qualified instructor, was a joy, his 1-2-1 coaching was amazing, and he was a great guide.
