“Back country skiing with virtually no one else on the hill, I think the longest we waited in a lift line was when I need to adjust my boots, amazing. Clear blue skies and easily some of the best off piste skiing I’ve ever done. Give Winter Sports a call, they can tailor a trip to your requirements.”
I want to say thank you to the Winter Sports Company for organising the amazing Heli skiing experience in Panorama, British Columbia, Canada.
The logistics worked very well, flying from Heathrow to Calgary and then a very short wait for the transfer by minibus to Panorama. The time you are travelling is obviously a lot longer than a ski trip to Europe but it is well worth it.
The resort of Panorama is small but perfectly formed. I could step out of my room, which was basic but functional, right on to the slopes, no more than 60 seconds from the main chair lift or the place we found to have really good poached eggs on toast with English breakfast tea (bonus) each morning to set us up for slopes and back country skiing with virtually no one else on the hill, I think the longest we waited in a lift line was when I need to adjust my boots, amazing.
Situated between the Purcell Mountains and the Rockies the scenery was stunning. Everyone in Panorama, from the lifties, ski patrol, bar staff, instructors in fact everyone was very helpful, polite and happy to help no matter what. Really different from some of the treatment you get in Europe.
The Heli skiing run by RK Heli Ski was very well organised, from the welcome phone call asking if we could pop down and fill out all the necessary paper work and take a boot so they could fit ski’s the night before to ensure we maximised our time on the hill.
We started the day with a good breakfast with a safety briefing followed by helicopter briefing and demos on using all the safety equipment. The guides were friendly, informative and attentive.
We picked up skis and poles and mounted the helicopter and felt the thump thump thump of the rotors as the engines started.
We took off and flew for around 20 minutes high in to the surrounding mountains to find our first descent. We’d had about 20 inches of snow the night before so the snow conditions were perfect but unfortunately the light was a little flat. However the following day was clear blue ski’s and bright sunshine and easily some of the best off piste skiing I’ve ever done. It was amazing, deep powder, long runs, huge smiles.
If you’ve never done off piste and always wanted to give it a go then I’d suggest giving Winter Sports a call, they can tailor a trip to your requirements, skiing with Steve founder of Winter Sports, an excellent skier and qualified instructor, was a joy, 1-2-1 coaching and a great guide.
I loved so much I might buy the company! I’m already looking at my next trip with you.
