Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a ski instructor earn?

A ski instructor at Level 1 or 2 earns a modest wage (CAD$17-26 per hour) , but can quickly increase his or her potential by climbing the ladder to Level 3 or 4 within their body of qualifications. Increasing their private requests, working as a dual certified instructor, tips and bonuses and acheiving mini celebrity statuses all help to bring in the endorsements and increased earnings. Till you reach those dizzy heights, a Level 3 instructor will be your benchmark and bring in approximately (CAD$23-28 per hour) but also more hours work per week as you become more employable.

How long does it take to become a ski instructor?
Becoming a certified ski instructor can take as little as 3 days if your skills are eligible to pass the CSIA Level 1 course. Most Level 1 Ski Instructor courses are conducted over 3-5 days due to its high pass rate, depending on the governing body. However it is recommended to enrol on pre-course training with a provider such as the Winter Sports Company to best prepare for the Level 1 and most definitely the Level 2 ski instructor exams. This preparation can commonly take 2-3 weeks before taking the Level 1 certification and a further 5 weeks before taking the Level 2 certification. Successful applicants will be able to work in many countries around the world with a Level 2 certificate with either CSIA, BASI, NZSIA, PSIA to name a few.
How fun is it really - or is it all training and responsibility?

The courses are going to be some of the best times you have ever had in your life. Period. Great fun, no boss, no time constraints, just getting out what you are prepared to put in. We put you with similar ages to ensure you are on similar stages in your life.

Internships are some of the best fun you’ll ever have as you grow and learn with like minded people but there are serious work elements to it and you need to treat this as a job, like you would with any new employer

Do you do courses for every age group?

Well our youngest is 17 and our oldest has been 79yr. So in a way yes. We guide you to the right course for the right experience. There is a time and place to mix ages and we know when it works and when it doesn’t. So if we don’t have a course thats right for you we will pass you onto a company that will. Sound fair?

Where can I read honest reviews - not just the stuff you post?

We don’t post anything, what you see is straight from Trustpilot or Google and if that is not enough then put a post on Reddit.com or Snowheads.com, you might find that someone replies. Otherwise request to see if you can chat to a previous client.

What is the best ski instructor course?
The best ski instructor course depends on many factors like expert coaching, suitable terrain for the training, internationally recognised qualifications, teaching opportunities or potential internship positions within the resort. Small group training benefits the student, but also consider other elements like having an environment which has less interruptions such as cat tracks, hazards, flat ski areas, crowded slopes, and icy conditions. Overall a good ski coach, excellent terrain and a well equipped resort hosting a popular governing body will ensure a fantastic ski instructor course.
How much does a ski instructor course cost?
Ski instructor courses typically cost between GBP £3,500 and £10,000 depending on the location, duration, and what’s included. Packages often cover transfers, training, lift passes, accommodation, exams, and some meals. Full-season courses combining Level 1 and 2 qualifications tend to cost in the region of £6500-9500 but provide better career prospects. Shorter, fast-track Level 1-only courses are less expensive (£3000-5000) but may require further investment later to reach higher certification levels. As a good rule of thumb depending on where you fly to and from you could say comfortably that £1000 per week will cover EVERYTHING that is connected with the course including your flights, insurance, equipment, food, spending money and course fees.
Why are your courses differing in price to other providers?

Generally speaking we put you in double rooms, include Level 1 and where applicable Level 2 modules/exams and almost everything, except flights, insurance and spending money. Some courses include meal plans.

So if another providers’ course is looking vastly different in price and they offer the exact same inclusions. Then we would imagine that, depending on the price,  either the accommodation is a poorer quality, or they are cramming you into the rooms (or in some cases the same beds!) or they are simply charging more profit.
We are incredibly transparent and work off keeping it fair for everyone to enjoy the mountains and if that means working a little harder and longer at our end to do so then so be it.

Im 40, need a career break- whats best for me?

Good Question- Some of you want qualifications with a view to start a new career, some just want the experience. Try the All Mountain Safety & Freeride Performance Camp in Revelstoke, It’s a real crowd pleaser for those on a career break. Or for a tamer version try the Dual Resort programme and take things a little easier.

What qualifications do you need to become a ski instructor?
To become a ski instructor you generally need to hold a Level 1 licence with a recognised governing body such as PSIC, CSIA in Canada,  PSIA in the USA, BASI in UK, NZSIA in New Zealand and the new PSIE in Europe. Whilst Level 1 concentrates on basic introductory skills, it is also focuses on safety and safeguarding in this new environment. The Level 2 & 3  furthers this knowledge increasing the advanced skills and techniques over more challenging terrain. The Level 2 certificate is considered the benchmark to sustain a successful career around the world as a ski instructor.
Will I actually earn enough to offset the course fees?

Nope. with an internship you will never re-coup the money you invested in the first year. But do you at university? If you are doing this as a gap year then let’s face it you are usually being helped a little or a lot by family. If you are doing this as a career, then like university it will be a few years till you pay this course fee off.

Why can't i just do a course and then get a job instead of using you?

Providers like ourselves often gobble up the entry level 1 instructor positions in the bigger resorts. So doing it off your own back is sometimes a little harder unless you are willing to work at a smaller resort. Which we can help with. It’s our most affordable way for those who cannot afford an internship. Enquire for details.

Can you become a ski instructor with no experience?
If you have no experience skiing then no, however if you are a good intermediate skier but no teaching experience, then yes. Gaining the necessary tools and skills along the way to confidently teach and become a good ski instructor is part of the learning process. Assuming you can link turns on a red run at a moderate speed consistently will allow you to join a ski instructor course or better still, if you have prior teaching, coaching, babysitting, volunteering experience with kids you could be eligible to join a ski instructor internship with a provider such as the Winter Sports Company, giving you that important foot in the door to kickstart your career.
Do you put profit on our course elements?

Yes, between 12% and 40%, depending on the course.

We’re a business, not a charity. We’re also ATOL-protected, fully insured, and take big financial risks upfront – buying in bulk, negotiating with resorts, and piecing everything together long before you show up.

Could you DIY your own season? Maybe. But it’ll cost you more, take longer, and be way harder to stitch together. We’ve done the legwork so you don’t have to.

If another provider is charging more for the same thing? Fair question: ask them how much they’re making. We keep our margins lean and our quality high – that’s how we offer some of the best-value instructor experiences in the business.

Do the maths. We have.

University or Gap Year?

You’ve spent more than 13 years in education, building up knowledge within the walls of classrooms and lecture halls. Along the way, you’ve had some brilliant teachers- and, let’s be honest, some not so brilliant ones. But knowledge alone isn’t the full picture. What many of you are still missing is wisdom.

Wisdom isn’t taught in textbooks. It comes from life-travel, mistakes, real work, and experiences outside the safety net of school. Knowledge and wisdom are equally important, and when kept in balance, they shape not just a sharper mind but a more rounded perspective. That balance often leads to sounder, wiser decisions in life.

So, ask yourself: is it time to step out, seek some worldly wisdom, and sharpen your edge- or will you just keep grinding away? Even the hardest-working tool can grow blunt without care. Keep your axe sharp, and stay open to what’s out there.

What if I just want to ski and I’m not really into teaching?

In that case you should look at our instructor courses, not the internships. Our MasterClass Camps, All Mountain Safety or Ski Patrol courses will give you the skills but not put you in a position of having to teach.

Do people actually end up working as instructors afterwards?

Yes really! If you are putting the effort into searching for work you will get a job. Don’t be too picky with your first choice of resort. Getting accommodation however in the biggest resorts now seams to be the main challenge, so find employment early or use our Level 2 or 3 Internships to secure your job, further training and most importantly your accommodation.

Canada vs Europe for ski instructor training - what’s better?

Rule of thumb. If you want to go on a course shorter than 4 weeks go to Europe unless you get a good deal from us. Longer than 4 weeks go to Canada as week by week it will be cheaper in Canada. Additionally go to Europe for the party scene, but Canada for the fresh powder. Off piste in Europe is out of bounds and needs special insurance. Canada off piste is often patrolled and inbounds requiring no special insurance. Great if you want to freeride and enjoy the pow.

I'm 50. I don't want to be with youngsters, i just want to improve, what is suitable for me?

We have specific MasterClass programmes for people just like you. Every year we get skiers wanting to improve their ability and want a little more comfort whilst doing so. You are never to late to dust off those boots!

Can I speak to past clients?

Our reviews and video testimonials and podcasts tend to give you positive overview. However in this day and age its hard to know whats marketing and whats truth. So we often reach out to a previous client for you to speak to if you are nervous about committing.

Can you guarantee i’ll pass my exams?

Quick answer is no, there are differing levels of difficulty in passing your exams as you progress. Whilst we offer no guaruntees, we will give you all the necessary training and more to get you successfully across that finish line, with a 99% pass rate at Level 1 each year and statistically between 92-97% pass rate at Level 2 on average across all our resorts. Our high pass rates are no secret, but can be credited to our clients being strongly encouraged to turn up fit (not try to get fit out there!) and we provide them with the right equipment. This ensures half the challenge is a success, the rest is down to our thorough training programmes and a little luck on the day to get you across the finish line. Level 3 has a much lower pass rate nationally around 20% of clients pass annually. It will require dedication and hard work to reach this higher level but could be accomplished within 2-3 winters.

Find out all you need to know with our FAQ section
What’s the best course if I’ve only skied a couple of weeks?

Easy, do an entry Level 1 only and see how you get on with that, before piling lots of money into something that you might struggle with later into your Level 2 syllabus.

I can't ski or snowboard. I only have £2000 spare

Well if you can arrive earlier and learn to ski or snowboard, then we can take you on the course as long as you can comfortably link turns on a red run at speed consistently. But the cheapest course we offer will end up costing you well over £3-5000 with everything included. Sorry we don’t do holidays.

Why is one resorts course offerings more expensive than another?

You might have noticed that some providers at certain resorts are more expensive than others. This will primarily be down to lift pass costs, accommodation quality and location and maybe trainer rates. So accommodation 40 mins away from the resort will be cheaper than one 20 mins away and cheaper still than accommodation in resort. For example, Whistlers lift passes and accommodation will generally be more expensive than others. Some previous clients have reported spending over £1500 more in a season on their experiences than being in a smaller resort.
