How long does it take to become a ski instructor ?

Below are the skills and qualifications that intermediate skiers will obtain from short courses to long courses; your level of skiing will significantly improve with expert ski instruction you are destined for greatness! But it’s hard on the wallet during that initial training season.

– 3-5 weeks: In a condensed ski instructor course, reaching Level 1 to coach complete beginner skiers on gentle green runs and magic carpets is possible in some places indoors or dry ski slopes. Your options will be limited to basic terrain and techniques taught. Typically, level 1 is only recognised in the country that issued it. However, you can convert it to any other Level 1 equivalency within the ISIA (International Ski Instructors Association) before starting a Level 2 course in that new governing body. For example, a BASI Level 1 would get their ski instructor qualification recognised within the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance so that they can attempt their Level 2 ski instructors course. The same goes for a snowboard instructor course.

– Suggested course:

3-5 week Level 1 Ski Instructor

– 10-12 weeks: This is the typical duration for a solid training program to achieve your Level 1 and 2 certifications. Level 2 is considered the international standard across the industry and opens up many teaching and resort job opportunities worldwide. A motivated intermediate skier can realistically obtain their Level 1 and Level 2 instructor qualifications in a comprehensive 3-month instructor program with a good ski school and diligent practice on varied terrain. In summary, consider this the baseline for those wanting a career in the snowsports industry. Expect some humbling days on the slopes. But laugh it off with a beer or two with your mates!

You can become dual-certified to teach both skiing and snowboarding. And have time to pursue additional specialised certifications like freestyle instruction, racing techniques, or avalanche safety training. This longer timeline also works well if you need more time at the start to develop your personal downhill skiing abilities before diving into teaching drills. Expect some bruises. You’ve got to break some eggs to make an omelette, right? Skiing or riding for this long will take it out of you! Prepare for sore muscles and a whole lot of laughter.
