First of all thank you for choosing us and trusting us with your course, it means a lot to us and we hope to do everything we can to make it a trip you will remember forever.
Why we do this?
Thats easy. You trust us with a relatively small slice of your life, a large portion of your savings and what is, to date, maybe one of the most significant decisions of your life so far. Now, we consider ourselves privileged to try and turn that into one of the best memories you’ll ever have.
Which, if you think about it, we’ve got a pretty cool job to do. Don’t you think?
It just so happens, we also put together some of the best instructor courses in Canada.
However, we will be the first to admit we aren’t perfect, there are a lot of moving parts to your course, and we may miss some of your emails or, at times, be a little slow to reply. We apologise in advance and encourage you to just pick up the phone and call us if that is the case. We are always here to chat and you have permission to pester us if you need some attention from the Winter Sports Office!

Going Forward….
This is mostly aimed at some of the younger clients heading out to resort; This Onboarding is a really important process of your trip and we find that the more you take control at this stage the more prepared you are and the less surprises there are on d-day. We find that the time between having that initial phone call and actually turning up to the resort, is actually quite a long time and some of you understandably have forgotten what has or hasn’t been offered in your package. Its normal for the odd one of you to forget which resort they have chosen.
Small Request
May we come to an agreement? Your dealing with a smaller bespoke company, not some faceless giant with unqualified individuals at the helm. So we are available to help by email or phone, and encourage you to get in touch if you are stuck. But as a polite request- we really like our weekends like everyone else and would appreciate any questions or advice needed, to be requested during the working week, but if you have an urgent situation then by all means call us directly and speak to one of the team.

It’s sometimes important for us to manage peoples expectations along the way and politely remind everyone what you are getting within your programme. Sometimes it’s really hard to rectify any misunderstandings at that late stage. So please the best place to start is to take the time to re-read your quote, and any further information flowing your way like the knowledge base information, the blogs, and please write any down any questions you have.

A Lot Of Moving Parts
We have a few people behind the scenes helping us run the WSC. They can be found under the About Us section. Otherwise, by now you should know Emma & Rik, who keep things ticking along while our remote team members deal with you in the resort. You will get to know our UK team (Rob & Abbie) over the next few weeks as they help us to keep things rolling along smoothly as possible. They may contact you from time to time.
We don’t pay full-time employees. We don’t have expensive offices or large overheads. We call in and work very closely with experts to complete their tasks when the time is right and release them when they aren’t needed.
Orchestrating your course
Think of us as the conductors in an Orchestra. Thankfully we don’t fly your plane, or cook your food, we don’t own the accommodation, and we certainly don’t teach you to ski. We leave all this to the experts.
We leave them to do what they do best whilst we do what we do best: implementing the best instructor training programs available.
The benefit of this is you get professionals both on and off the slopes when it matters the most, we can then offer our courses cheaper than everyone else! Giving you the best bang for your buck with all our efforts aimed at you.
We will support you from your first, tentative steps as a qualified instructor through to specialising in one of our advanced programmes. Remember there have been hundreds of clients before you, and those lucky individuals have had the time of their lives, and the best part….

Securing Your eTA
Electronic Travel Authorisation
Canada holds a visa-exemption policy with many countries, including the UK and Ireland, allowing citizens to visit Canada for up to six months without requiring a visa. As of March 15 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals entering Canada by air will require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA).
All travellers must have an eTA to board their flight. Those with a valid Canadian working visa (such as an IEC working holiday visa) do not need to apply for a separate eTA as an eTA is included within the documentation of the visa entry letter.
If you’re heading to Canada for one of our ski or snowboard courses, rest assured that the process of obtaining an Electronic Travel Visa (eTA) is straightforward. For UK nationals, this can be done online and typically takes just a few minutes to a few days to get approved. Here’s our comprehensive guide to the eTA process, designed to make your journey as smooth as possible and get you on the slopes in no time.
Please Note: DO NOT PAY A 3RD PARTY COMPANY TO OBTAIN YOUR eTA. It costs approx $7 and takes 20 mins to complete.

A quick run down of what pre-requisites there are to getting an IEC Working Holiday Visa. Plan ahead, especially if you want to secure a job, training and most importantly, secure accommodation for the following winter. If you intend to do one of our Level 2 or 3 Internships next winter, this is for you:

If you’re on our internship program, then yes, you will need a working holiday visa as this will allow you the rights to work in Canada. If you’re on one of our courses that does not include work as part of the trip, then no, you will not need to apply for a working holiday visa. You will need to apply for Electronic Travel Authorization so that you can enter Canada as a visitor.
The purpose of the eTA is to provide Canadian Immigration with information about you. This includes a few simple background questions about your current job, financial information for your visit to Canada, and any medical issues you may have.
Use the link in this section. Citizens in many countries can apply online for an electronic travel authorisation, a simple online process that can be completed before or after you have booked a course – but you must have applied before you travel. A decision is usually instantaneous, and the ETA costs $7. Once approved, this holiday permit is valid for 5 years.
After recent changes in the summer of 2024, UK nationals are now eligible for up to three years on their working holiday visa.This is broken down into an initial 2 year visa then a separate 3rd year when the first expires.
You must ensure your passport is valid beyond your expected stay in Canada. For those applying for a working holiday visa on our internship programs, your passport must be valid for at least the full term if you want your full visa entitlement. Your eTA is electronically attached to your passport it will not transfer to your new passport automatically so make sure you apply for another eTA if you recently got another passport.
At the time of writing this no you do not, however you can go online and go to an eTA status checker to download & print your eTA status to show a paper trail to the staff at the airport. It also might give you piece of mind that everything is in place!
Then it is unlikely that you will get an eTA and therefore will not be able to enter Canada, Its important to inform us immediately of this situation.

Payments, Banking & Communications
Arranging your Payments to WSC
Depending on what option you ticked upon signing up you have either opted to pay the £300 to secure your course placement. A further £1000 will complete your deposit which is paid 16 weeks before flying. Please make a date in your calendars to pay this 2nd payment. The bank details are found at the bottom of your quote. This is part of your course fee and not extra. The final amount is either paid as a lump sum 8 weeks before flying or if you have opted for a more flexible payment plan then equal weekly or monthly instalments up to 2 weeks before flying. This latter payment model is up to you to arrange through your bank by standing order and inform WSC what you have arranged. Reminders will be sent out along the way but if you could make the reminders in your alerts that would be appreciated.

Spending While You’re Away
Using your UK debit card in Canada may see you rock up a number of non-sterling transaction fees. It’s not uncommon for people to run into issues when trying to use a UK card abroad. Here’s a run through of how to manage your money abroad and whether you should buy a Canadian sim card. The earlier you can do this task the sooner you can make the most of the exchange rates between now and flying and transfer your home currency into Canadian dollars. Is your home currency strong to the dollar right now? If so get your wise account set up and transfer some over!
WISE Debit Card: I have been travelling for many years now and the card I have found to be the easiest, cheapest, most transparent with conversion charges etc is this bank, it’s one card with as many currencies as you like. Takes less than 10 mins to sign up and make sure you apply for the debit card. Do it early as it takes a while to arrive. (7-14 days) Not saying its the best but I have no complaints and its easy for you and your family to top up and save on bank fees!! It also means you can spend using Canadian dollar without needing to setup a Canadian bank account.

Yes you should otherwise you will feel the financial pinch every time to use your native currency card.
We suggest Wise for all our clients. As mentioned before this bank card has been tried and tested and approved. So keep things simple.
You will in the first week have time to get a sim card. However Sun Peaks clients will end up with less opportunity as the nearest town is 40 mins away and a little expensive to get there. So try to get something at the airport in Vancouver or in resort if need be. Sussing what you want in advance is a good idea. Panorama clients live 20 mins from town and its easy to get down there on your day off, but regardless of which resort you are in your first 3 weeks are limited for time off so have some data on your phone as back up. Read the blogs for ideas.
We all use Whats App in the lead up to the course and during your training. WSC and Trainers will post on the WhatsApp groups which will be set up in advance of you heading out.
Yes there are areas where you can get wifi but its slow, so please make sure you have something already on your account set up so you can stay in touch with home and your fellow peers. EE and Vodafone sometimes do great roaming packages that you can take away with you.

Insurance For Your Course
Do Your Due Diligence!
Insurance is an essential purchase when taking part in a ski season. Not only is it a prerequisite in our terms and conditions, but you also don’t want a hefty bill if something goes wrong. We break down the sorts of questions you should be asking insurance providers and our recommendations for winter sports coverage so you get the most for your £.
For those entering Canada on a working holiday visa, you will be required to have insurance for the full two years upon entry into Canada. For those taking one of our courses and NOT applying for a working holiday visa, you will only require insurance for the duration of your intended stay. See the following guides for more information on the insurance you’ll need for your course.
Do I Need Insurance for my Ski/Snowboard Instructor Course?
Going Off-piste, Back country or hitting the Terrain Park?
Please check your policy covers you for the Bolt Ons that you have picked. It is up to you to make sure you are fully insured if you are going in the terrain park, out of resort boundaries, heli skiing or Cat skiing, In Canada if you are within resort boundaries and have not gone beyond any closed areas, then you are likely insured under your policy but please double check.
You can use this link to cover you for any extra days that you are going to do these activities by arranging a quote with this company IF your main policy will not cover it. There is a link below to help you arrange a quote. Remember only those who are either wanting to be in the Terrain park or leaving resort boundaries with or without a guide will need to check their insurance for extra coverage. It is ultimately up to you as an individual to arrange this.

Most people decide to get insurance before they pay the full amount 8 weeks before flying. However remember you can always get a single trip insurance policy and be covered from the date you pay for your policy not just the date you fly.
As a bare minimum your insurance should cover you for the duration of your course and stay in Canada. Your insurance should also include Winter sports cover. Ideally you would have insurance before you travel so that you have cancellation cover should the worst happen and you’re unable to go.
It needs to cover medical, repatriation, cancellation & curtailment. It must also cover you for winter sports both on piste and off piste but within resort boundaries which are patrolled in Canada. (considered different in Europe)
Anything else is up to you, equipment, belongings. Also think about do you want a family member to fly out in case of emergencies?
Toptip: Base your insurance policy on this question? “How much money do I want to recover in case I get injured and need to fly home?” What ever that amount is in the policy, if you are happy recovering that amount then the rest of the policy should fall into place satisfactorily.
If you are skiing or snowboarding then YES. Decide if you are going to be sking or riding in the park and get coverage for this too. Each policy is different. Are you planning on backcountry and going outside of resort boundaries or heliskiing? In which case you might need additional insurance nearer the time. This can be added to your existing policy or purchase a seperate policy for the day(s)
No sorry. Please check your policy carefully as we are not brokers and cannot legally advise you. All we can do is suggest which providers have been good to previous clients.You must do your own due diligence. We have previously sent you documentation covering as much information as we legally can without over stepping the mark.
Depending on the severity of the injury, you will be sent to Ski Patrol who will assess your injury and deal with the injury or stabilse you, consisting of either patching you up and a pat on the back then calling you a taxi to the hospital or in some cases calling an ambulance or air ambulance.
A WSC rep will be notified by Ski Patrol or alerted by one of the clients. We shall assist where we can but please be aware there are lots of people in resort which require our presence at times. If it is possible and we can do so we will transport the client to the local hospital or arrange a taxi. Some reps do not necessarily have transportation.
We will make sure the patient is stable, looked after and not distressed. Then help with informing the insurance company and if asked the family member.
WSC will remain the go-to between injured person-insurance company and guardian for as long as needed or required.
Sun Peaks has a good medical center at the base of the slopes. The main hospital is in Kamloops. Which is 40mins away.
Panorama has a hospital in Invermere which is 25 mins away but the main hospital is in Cranbrook which is 2hrs away.
Revelstoke has a hospital in town and its 5 mins from the resort.
Serious medical emergencies at Revelstoke, Sun Peaks or Revelstoke may involve being sent to Kelowna.
It happens! If you are injured at home or injured on the ski lift or worse, slip on the pavement and that injury prevents you from starting or completing the training then you will be given a reasonable amount of time to recover and rejoin but if you miss too much training then you will fall behind too far and have to decide whether you fly home and recover your money from the insurance company or stay in Canada and recover on your own time. In which case we need to discuss what WSC can do to salvage your goals and dreams.
Please Note: We have in the past transferred the die hards over to an 8 week Fast Track course late in the season to allow their injuries to improve but this is at an extra cost. Please note your course fees have been allocated and cannot be transferred to other courses or other years. It is also worthy to note that whilst you will be covered medically, you cannot claim off your insurance for curtailment or cancellation if you decide to stay out in resort!

Flights:
Don’t panic about your flights if you have chosen to fly with the WSC. All will be dealt with in due course and you will be sent the flight details between 2-5 weeks before flying. Once the flights have been separated and sent to us we can forward them on to you. Until that time we cannot send. you your actual flight booking. We will however send you the information you need on an email.
Emma is on hand to answer any questions regarding the flights and travel process. Your quote should have the preliminary flight date, with arrival and departure airport name.
Please Note: When you receive the flight information immediately check that the details are the same as in your passport. These mistakes cannot be rectified easily if missed and will be considered a change at your expense should any charges be incurred.
As a polite reminder: Emma is the person you contact for your booking information, insurance questions, flight information or visa advice.
Updates Here:
All things considered you will be required to fill out a few more forms and sign some documents as time rolls on, so ensure that you collect bits of paperwork as you go along. We suggest getting a folder at this stage to keep everything together and be a central point of storing your information from insurance to lift pass waivers, to passport pdf’s.Try to have paper copies of vital information in case your digital copies get lost. Sometimes the resorts change things in the lead up and we have to deal with these changes internally. Make sure you are very thorough in getting approval from us before booking your flight. We need to ensure that you are arriving at a suitable time to meet the group and travel on the same transportation provided. We suggest getting a flexible ticket so you can make changes should you or we need to.
Make some plans to find accommodation if you need to. As soon as you know you are going to be late, alert the person who is in charge of the group so we can plan accordingly. We will help arrange alternative transportation to the resort but this will be at your expense.
You need your passport, photo ID, proof of insurance, and a copy of your flight details. (tickets are issued at the airport).
Batteries run out! Take paper and digital copies of everything and tag, pin or save these in an easily accesible place on your laptop, phone or tablet.
Carry a folder for all your paper copies in your carry on bag.
Your tickets will be available at the airport.
With the WSC flights you have one carry on bag, one computer bag or equivalent. One hold bag, One ski/board bag and a boot bag allowance with your flights. More precise information on weight limitations can be found on the airlines baggage allowance webpage and/or on your ticket.
Depending on which airline we fly with your boot bag and ski bag weight limitation maybe combined.
At the time of writing, this usually has to be added at the airport on the day.You simply turn up early and go to the airlines desk or check in area and pay for this directly. Currently it has not been possible to add this to your booking unless stated in advance, hence paid for separately.
Usually in the airport at Costas or a similar venue nice and early. Our rep or Director will be there to greet you and help you get checked in. We will be there 4 hrs before the flight and will remain around check in till we cannot wait any longer. Somebody will be flying out to resort with you.
We will all be queuing up to first fill out some electronic forms, take a print out and see the immigration officer to explain our reason for entry. You will be asked some simple questions, before being let through. If you are unsure please ask them where to go next to get your work visa activated. DO NOT get guided into a direction that is different to what the immigration officer told you. It is extremely important that you remain in the area to process your visa before picking up your bags. Once you have passed through into arrivals there is no turning back to sort your visa out.
We are always on hand to discuss anything that you have concerns about or disagree with. Some of these forms are not created by us and you will subjected to the same terms as everyone else working in resort or using the slopes. These documents are sometimes governed by Canadian provincial law or local to the resorts owning company. If you have any disagreements please write to us by email and bring this to our attention at the time.
If you are one of our UK clients or joining the main group in London, then we normally fly out from Gatwick or Heathrow.
Sometimes clients fly in much later than the main group. In which case you will have to pay a supplement charge for us to organise individual transportation to catch up. This will be added to your quote or charged independently.
Check your quote, make sure that your name is spelt correctly and how it is on your passport. This is the name we will be using for your flights. So its important to get it changed NOW if its not right!

Ski & Snowboard Training Programmes
Professional coaching is provided, typically from Monday to Friday. Although it’s up to the Snow School and their scheduling. Weekends can be spent shadowing ski school, free-skiing or ticking off one your chosen Bolt-Ons. Please view the training programmes in the slider below. Please Note: Each resort does it differently and each course is different so this is an overview not exact training schedules as sometimes they are too numerous to mention across all the resorts to do and to keep them updated as each resort makes small changes.

AMP-All Mountain Safety & Free-ride Performance Camp
Those attending the Ski Patrol Course or All Mountain Safety & Free-ride Performance Camp depending on your programmes will be given professional coaching by one or more of the following organisations.
- Snow school’s Free-ride instructors,
- Mountain Operations Team instructors and
- Finally for any of your Backcountry training you will receive expert tuition from accredited ACMG guides with over 10 years of experience guiding in the slack and backcountry.
- First Aid Training-Will be provided by Peak Emergency and run by trained paramedics and/or Ski Patrol medical instructors
Should any pre learning be required for any of the modules you will be undertaking we will be sent this prior to your modules and will pass it on to you at the time. This is often only one week in advance of the specific module.

For those on the Ski Patrol course only, you must purchase a copy of the Outdoor Emergency Care 6th Edition in hard back or ebook. We recommend spending at least 30 hours pre reading before attending these courses. Once you have purchased a copy of the Outdoor Emergency Care 6th edition then please get in touch with us to request the priority study chapters so that you do not have to learn the whole book! We will email you the Priority Chapter Guide.
We suggest using the Priority guide to help you focus your studies on the most important sections.
Instructor Training Questions
Some commonly asked questions for those undertaking your Level 1 & 2 ski and snowboard Instructor training programmes. These programmes vary between resort, if you have specific questions pertaining to your resort that you need clarification on then please reach out to us and ask your question directly as they can be too numerous to put all of them here.
Very likely, the examples given are indicative and not cast in stone. The resort reserve the right to alter the training days if need be, however these changes are minor and you will be informed by your trainers or by WSC.
You will receive a minimum of *20hrs per week. Its enough trust us, you need time to recover from jet lag, time to get your ski/ride legs and time to chill out. Free skiing/riding is allowed on your days off. *Your specific programme may differ from this for example Big White training is generally more than 20hrs.
You will complete your exams in the 3rd week of being in resort.
Training days are run differently at each resort according to the resorts Snow School Ski & Ride Manager. Days off will be given, usually the first few weeks are reasonably intense so time is limited initially. Plenty of time will be allocated for you to take days off throughout the course. There is usually a good open window of opportunity after passing your Level 1 to fit in Bolt ons, have family or friends come out to join, explore other mountains or simply take some time off.
Your trainers are either long term level 3 instructors for the CSIA/CASI or Level 4’s. All have a minimum of 8 years instructing. They are tried and tested trainers who are very adept at keeping you on the edge of your comfort zone so that you neither get too tired and injure yourself nor conversely switch off and become bored.
Get as much as you can from these fantastic skiers and boarders as they will be really keen to share their knowledge. It may not be until much later that you really understand how lucky you are to share this time with these people. They are at the top of their game.
On another note they maybe your future mentor or employer so if you get the chance buy them a coffee or beer and keep them sweet!
If it says this on your quote then yes they are.
You are responsible for being present for your exams, which are a set date, there maybe a chance to resit if you fail or miss them, remember the exams require hard work and like every exam require a minimum level to pass.
Its a 4 day exam with a CASI conductor.

It is a combination of a 2 day Teach module, a 2 day Ski module and a 2 day Exam.
Your Level 2 training will begin after your Level 1 exam. There maybe time inbetween your Level 1 & 2, if so we encourage you to free-ride/ski, do some Bolt Ons or try a different discipline. Your schedules may change depending on the ski school and trainer availability. Sometimes we fit in a decent break in your schedule, other times we hit the ground running and get some headway into your Level 2 before taking the foot of the gas and giving you a breather to break up your Level 2 training.
If you are not ready, you will not pass. Every year some fail and some of those candidates are close enough to consider resitting the Level 2 at a nearby resort. We do everything we can to help but we are not responsible for you getting to a resit exam. It often costs around half the cost of your first exam to resit, but travel expenses and accommodation can add to the mounting costs. So it’s worth asking the examiner how far off you were from passing to gauge whether you are worthwhile going through the rigmarole to take the resit. We are doing a late level 2 in Revelstoke at the end of the season.
Ski Patrol | AMP Questions
Some commonly asked questions for those undertaking your Ski Patrol or All Mountain Safety & Free-ride Performance Camp (AMP). If you have questions pertaining to your specific course that you need clarification on then please reach out to us and ask your question directly. We will do our best to answer most of them but please understand that some of these may require to be answered by the individual governing body taking your training and may require longer to reply.
You will learn a lot more in regards to your training during your familiarisation days with each instructor.
The resort reserve the right to alter the training days if need be, however these changes are minor and you will be informed by your trainers or by WSC should this happen. You will not lose days but please appreciate you are being trained by professional Ski Patrollers and the mountain comes first. If an emergency is requiring all the patrollers efforts as a team then WSC training will be postponed to another time.
After your first 3 weeks. On average, you will receive 2 days per week from the Snow school. Its enough trust us. These days will be hard but fun!
The first 2 weeks is on-piste and then slowly you will be introduced to more challenging terrain in weeks 3-11.
Generally speaking during your All Mountain Safety course (AMP), expect to get 3-4 days training per week split amongst the disciplines. You can take days off or free ski outside of this. Some training is more demanding than others, so we are acutely aware of this and find a balance.
Your instructors are professionals within the Revelstoke team. They are some of the best in the world at what they do and have a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips. Soak it up!
AMP Trainees will be attending the NUEC-B which is an accredited 2 days first aid course.
The Ski Patrollers will be attending the NUEC-A & Advanced Protocols which is an accredited 10 day + 2 day course.
All of these courses are requiring an examination.
Your first aid courses are the ones to prepare for, if we are given enough notice we can help you with this. Peak Emergency have great teaching aids and experience to help you get through this challenging part of your training.
You will receive 4 days in total.
Yes you do. The equipment is not included. You will be responsible for your own touring equipment which can be hired in town or you can purchase Hybrid or specialist equipment depending on your budget. Please see our Knowledge Base article on Touring Equipment to help you decide.
We will provide you with an Avalanche Pack with transceiver, shovel & probe. This pack is on loan, a deposit is required which will be returned to you once all items accounted for.
Managing Your Time
Avoiding Burnout and Additional Training
During your course program, you will have days off scheduled between your training and other courses. We encourage you to use this time off to go skiing and riding with friends, explore and blow off steam. Big White, Panorama, Sun Peaks and Revelstoke are all huge mountains with extensive terrain that you must get out and make the most of, especially on powder days. That being said, it’s worth noting that your schedules will be full on. The training days are intense and require much physical and mental energy. It’s easy for fatigue to creep in, and before you know it, you’re burned out and unable to put your best foot forward each day. Remember that this isn’t a one-week family ski holiday; you’ll be on snow for weeks on end!!
With that in mind, we recommend taking a day off snow. Relax, grab a good brekky and explore the mountain towns or catch up on some life admin. Your trainers will also encourage you to take the day off snow now and then.
We also encourage you to use any days off from scheduled training to put in additional practice hours. Be mindful of energy levels and burnout, of course. This is particularly encouraged ahead of the Level 2 exams. Video one another, practice with your teachers and put in some laps on the terrain where your exams will be marked. The mileage adds up. Many of your trainers offer their spare time to squeeze in a couple of runs with you before exams.
Revelstoke
If you are taking part in Free-ride training at Revelstoke, then you really need to be ready for what the mountain will through at you. Turning up fit is essential to your success and recovery. This training programme is a great mix of Free ride skills but also Back country touring. The touring days will take a lot out of you, especially if you are not used to it. Hiking uphill on touring equipment, can whilst serene, be demanding on the legs and lungs. Thankfully you will not be doing back to back touring but be mindful the day or night before to rest as much as you can.
Big White & Hybrids
You are getting a lot of training in your programmes so once again be respectful of your body and your instructors time. They will make the effort to turn up and throw everything they have at you, so you need to reciprocate. Big nights out tends to mean small days on the mountain so don’t waste this opportunity that you have been given and make the most of your training, whilst you have access to these trainers. It isn’t their first rodeo and they can spot a hangover a mile away.

If you are planning on getting fit out there, then forget it. Some of you will have never experienced a winter season in Canada. It takes it out of you in so many ways and you need to be physically prepared.

Our courses and internships enable you to ride all day long, but it’s easy to forget how exhausting skiing and boarding is on the body. Building your strength and endurance will allow you to ride for long periods, and gives you a baseline to improve.
Strengthening your muscles and improving your flexibility can reduce the risk of common skiing injuries, such as ACL tears or fractures. More so, proper nutrition and adequate hydration supports muscle recovery and repair, allowing you to perform at your best on consecutive days.

Please do not expect to get fit out there, there are too many distractions and its much better for your experience if you start a training programme now!
Now. Not next week, not after my birthday, not on Bank Holiday Monday, not when your star sign is aligned with Uran…Just start. We’ve put a free 8 week programme together, its currently under a revamp but for now the format will give you some ideas.
My best advice is not to skip leg day and concentrate on legs, knees, ankles, core and flexibility. So in a nutshell cross-fit style training, Yoga and Squats.

You won’t be spending any time in the gym. You’ll be wiped at the end of the day. There will be off-snow training that focuses on movement and video analysis, ski boot and ski tuning clinics.
The program is designed to get harder; the working time increases and exercises advance from week to week. Depending on your fitness levels you may opt to skip the initial weeks, however we advise that everybody start with week one moving through the weeks mastering each exercise.
At the start of the programme, we outline how each workout is performed, breaking down timings and movements. Exercise will have numerous pictures and they’re helpful hints throughout. There is no pressure to do anything, if you do not feel comfortable with a new workout, control the intensity.
You only need a timer or stop watch to complete the main program.
There are some bonus pages in the programme that require bands or dumbbells, and of course you’re welcome to make movements harder by adding weights as you feel comfortable and ready for the challenge.
There is no formal fitness test for any ski season, but it’s wise to build your endurance muscle strength and stamina so you can get the most out of your season. Being fit can reduce the chance of injury.
The programme is designed to get progressively harder throughout the weeks. However, if you are unable to complete a certain movement or don’t feel ready you do not have to advance! Change out the hard exercises for the ones you know you can do, and work similar muscle groups.
The programme is mix of slow and controlled strength movements and high intensity, sweaty style workouts. This combination will help to improve both your muscle and cardiovascular endurance, both are essential for a long day the slopes.
You keep repeating weeks as often as you need to until you feel you’re ready to progress to the next level.
Not only do you need to train your muscles, but skiing and boarding require cardiovascular, strength and flexibility. If you’re not very active, to get ready for the winter, you will want to start to think about your fitness 6-12 weeks prior to flying to make sure you build up enough strength in time.
Stretching will give you more mobility, making your muscles more resilient and overall, more fit for strenuous activities like skiing or boarding.
Leg strength is incredibly important for getting ski fit. Perhaps the most obvious part of your body that needs tuning up before you click into your skis or lock into your board. Leg strength is key to longer days spent skiing with less fatigue and soreness.
Everything including your glutes, hamstrings, calves and quadriceps will be working overtime when you start gliding down the slopes. So, really working out your legs in the weeks before your ski trip will prepare your body immensely.
Developing more core strength is a big part of ski/board fitness. After all, leaning side to side, bracing yourself to slow down and stop takes a lot of core strength. Overlooking this important aspect of ski fitness is a big mistake.
The snow shred section of the programme is done by performing one of the exercises for the allowed time, resting, then moving down the page for the next exercise and so on and so forth. Each one working in a time, resting or change. Make sure you have a quick read and look over the exercises before starting.
Mountain maintenance workouts are slower, requiring control and focus.
Instead of jumping, you can rise high onto your toes reach your body up. Adding weight or moving quicker will also increase the intensity of any exercise.
It is for everyone looking to get fit and season ready! You’ll quickly notice some elements will replicate skiing and boarding.

The average temperature in interior BC sits around the minus ten mark, and there will be a few colder snaps throughout the season. Especially when it hits those minus 20 to 30 days, you’ll thank your previous self for investing in quality gear. From base to mid to outer layers, we run through what you should be looking for when buying gear for the slopes. So although vintage gear looks cool, it won’t keep you warm – save it for Spring skiing!

Up to you, the GBP£ is strong against the dollar at time of writing so its cheaper in Canada and lots of gear out there. However those going to Sun Peaks will have less opportunity to shop, whereas those going to Panorama or Fairmont Hot Springs will have some opportunity to go shopping. Otherwise buy in the UK a mix of Snow & Rock, Ellis Brigham, Decathalon, Mountain Warehouse, StellarEquipment.
Soft shell clothing is where you have an outer weather proof layer attached to a thermal layer within. A hard shell is a layering method where these two elements are seperate garments. Acheived with a hard shell wind and water proof jacket and pants and a separate down jacket underneath.
Gloves, down jacket, good socks and a full face snood.
There is usually a period where it can reach over -25-30, you may not be teaching on these days but training may occur if really necessary in short spurts in between lots of hot chocolate and cafe stops.
If the conditions are worse or considered dangerous then only the lower parts of the mountain will be accessed or simply closed for those few days. This is an unfortunate event and obviously outside of everyones control but will affect your work hours during that period.
They get frozen up with your breath, so have a spare in your pocket to swap it out half way through the day. We will have some great WSC branded ones arriving soon. They are essential for covering up on those cold days when frost nip is a reality.
No, you don’t have room. One set is enough.

What Should I be Using?
Directly from those in the industry, Harry and Sam give their insight below about the best skis, boards and boots for working as an instructor. Ski shops can be a little overwhelming, and it’s easy to just go with what looks aesthetic.
But working as an instructor requires you to have versatility, as often your morning and afternoon lessons are drastically different in terms of student skills and snow conditions. The morning could have you chasing powder in the back bowls with a few keen riders looking to progress, or you could be up and down the magic carpet holding the hands of a toddler. No lesson looks the same, and you should have gear that suits all conditions, and that may mean owning multiple skis or boards.
Harry and Sam are seasoned season-aires and are willing to share their tips when buying.
Boarders: An all mountain board with reasonable stiffness aimed at intermediate skill level will be all you need to know. As initially its not as important as the skiers to get this right. You will soon understand how far on the stiffness spectrum you can get away with. Something too stiff and its going to be rough ride and unforgivable. Too soft and you will feel that its lacking drive and stability for those big carving days when on your Level 2 curriculum.
You will need to ride switch at times and demonstrate this so keep that in mind when looking at directional boards.

Skiers: When doing these courses, you should ensure you have an 74-80mm ski if you are taking your course at Sun Peaks, Big White or Panorama.
This is because learning to carve will be the main focus for most of the course and the conditions depict this width of ski, and the narrower your skis are, the easier it is to carve. Ideally around 74-80mm width is ideal for Canadian on piste carving conditions.
If you can afford two sets of skis then broaden your scope by bringing your narrow carving skis then go nice and wide for your powder skis, then you are covered for all conditions. For those park rats, then by all means bring your spare set or beloved twin tips for your days off. But for training days you need to have a suitable carving ski.
As a general rule of thumb unless you really know what you are buying and why, then getting a suitable length ski which ends somewhere between your nose and eyebrows for an All Mountain ski or chin to eye level for something easier to carve and more responsive will be a fair judgement. When you are starting off a shorter ski/board is preferable, if you are advanced skier or rider the longer your ski or board the more directional it will be but certainly more stable at speed.
Half The Battle
Being on the right equipment and turning up fit in our opinion is winning half the battle before you have even started. So take our word for it when it comes to equipment.
We often have an incredibly high pass rate because we try to get everyone on the right TYPE of equipment. Those who arrive on too soft a ski soon outgrow it and end up buying a more performance orientated ski/board. Those of you intending to do some Level 3 or advanced training as a Bolt On or joining the MasterClass programme late in the season will really need a good stiff high performance ski with great carving ability as you will definitely be put through your paces by the trainers that will be coming in especially to take this module.

**Those with free skis included in their packages or whom were eligible at the time for the deal, will be given the Salomon Stance 80’s-84’s or equivalent. They are a great ski for getting through your Level 1 and a real workhorse of a ski for teaching on. However if you want to upgrade your free package then its a further £120 to get a higher performance ski such as the K2 Disruption range. Your free ski or board will be given to you without choice unless an upgrade is requested well in advance.
Additional Notes
• Boots, Helmets & Goggles: I suggest purchasing these items at your resort (Revelstoke, Panorama/Calgary, or Big White or Sun Peaks), especially for boots, as they often need remoulding after a week or two of use. Helmets and goggles should ideally be purchased together to ensure a good fit. If you are buying your goggles online thats fine but do not do the same with your helmet. A good tip although not critical is to buy the same brand of helmet and googles so they fit together perfectly.
• Skis & Boards: If you’re buying in the UK and have access to a snow dome on a regular basis, it’s a bonus to be able to try your gear before the trip. However buying in-resort also has advantages, but expect to pay retail prices unless you opt for the Salomon or Atomic offerings from WSC, these two companies can quickly replace any faulty items during your stay in Canada. Outside of this you will get basic discount of 10% by being a WSC clients in resort.
• Snowboards: Consider the K2 Embassy for beginner to intermediate courses, and the K2 Manifest for more advanced riders. Alternatively, you can purchase from Noble Custom or in-resort at Syndicate in Invermere near Panorama. We also have some great new deals with Weston, (more to follow!)
• Ski Instructors (Sun Peaks & Panorama): Skis with 68-74-80 mm underfoot width are ideal for Level 1 & 2 courses. If you’re only buying one pair, then it’s up to you whether you want to lean towards the wider end of the range.
• Revelstoke Ski Patrollers & All Mountain Safety Course: Aim for skis in the 80-84mm range for on-piste skiing and/or 95-110mm for free-riding or patrolling. Those wanting a All Mountain or Powder ski, don’t go crazy, stay around the 95-110mm range. But personal preference at the end of the day.
• Poles Don’t go overboard—stick with simple, functional options unless you need touring poles. However you could look at the Blog on poles and understand the issue here as Harry suggests adjustable poles. There are pros and cons to them, pricey and not as strong but really handy for adjusting them depending on the type of skiing you are doing. Buy them in resort or on the shop store.
• Gloves: Having 2 pairs of gloves is invaluable in cold temperatures. One for the slopes and one for town. Either get them from Snowshepherd (all lines available) Or alternatively again buy them in resort.
Snow Shepherd do some fantastic options for gloves. Also worth checking out their brand new Lotus ski clothing its an incredible ground breaking material and is fast becoming a brand to be seen in.
Ski or Board Bags- As mentioned before we do some great options. Saves you faffing in Canada trying to buy one. Its not something shops stock plentifully as they take up a lot of room.

Yes they do, however you will receive a discount code which will make all those nasty costs reduce in size and make them more palatable. All clients will get 30% discount from WSC on all products. This code will be sent to you by email and can be used by yourself, friends and family.
Yes of course, bring twin tips, park skis, race skis, a sledge, whatever you like but when your working or training then make sure you are on the right tool for the job.
No sorry because you are not getting it through a shop there are some pros and cons. We do not send them out with bindings put on your rails or DIN settings adjusted. Either you can do this yourself, or if you don’t know then there is LOTS of information on Youtube to help you. We also rely on the resort to do a final check for you before you start training/working.
Either choose the Canada options or if you are choosing something from the UK market then we can if you ask potentially bring the items out to Canada for you if needed but you will need to pay for a luggage charge or nominal cost depending on the size/weight.
You need to wear your ski/board boots. Then take a measurement from floor to chin and floor to bridge of nose. These are the measurements that really help us to understand what ski you need to be on. Generally speaking…Piste skis will be somewhere between the chin and bridge of nose and off piste, All Mountain Skis will be above your bridge of nose to top of forehead.
They are generally last years models but they are brand new and with bindings. Salomon Stance 80’s or 84’s or equivalent. If you want to upgrade your free skis or board then you can pay another £120 to upgrade to a more performance orientated product. Or you will be given a discount code to apply to any upgrade you like . Enquire for details and how this works.

If I could say this over and over and over again then maybe just maybe one year we could get everyone using soft luggage and leaving those hard cases behind. You don’t have a lot of room to hide your luggage, soft luggage rolls up and packs away. Leaving more room for you to see the carpet for example. Which is nice.
WSC have some great examples of strong, branded kit bags at great prices which additionally, make you look pro at the airport. Or shop online for a soft kit bag style luggage with or without wheels. I use one very soft medium size bag, no wheels, chuck over the shoulder crew bag. This will be my “day bag”. This will be at the top of my luggage or in my ski/board bag. Great for quick grab and go when on the road. I may use this bag as my cabin bag. Then I will have a main luggage bag which has wheels.
Yep! Some years are worse than others but someones bag always seems to get delayed or on the wrong plane. So put ID tags on, clearly stating name, contact details. Mark/colour code your luggage as they can easily look the same when there are 20-40 of us getting on a coach. If your bag goes missing temporarily then that day grab bag mentioned above is great if you have a few small items to get you by whilst your other luggage turns up.
Check out the blogs in this section and realise that, you will not need “outfits” you are not going to “nightclubs” this isn’t a fashion show. If you cannot fit what you need in the allowance and you think you need another bag, then I rethink your packing methods or dump some non-essentials. Bring 70’s gear though!
If you are getting your equipment out in Canada then buy a board or ski bag at home. If you have your own skis or board put that in the bag as you normally would. Then you can fill your clothes around your ski/board gear.
If you have room, Then put your smaller soft luggage into your ski bag with 2 days worth of clothing, toothbrush etc to grab without emptying your entire luggage. the “grab bag” is great if you are on the road for a couple of days getting to your final location. **This is for the Panorama crew going out in November especially.
Bags are tricky, shops don’t always stock them, they order them in as they are bulky items to store. So either take that risk and faff ordering or get something at home and put what ski gear you have in it.
Air Canada Airlines sometimes like to know there is ski gear in the ski bag but they very rarely check, the guy on the overboard luggage drop off doesn’t care. So its your risk at the end of the day but our groups rarely get asked to open their bags to prove it.
Westjet are even more relaxed. So those flying to Panorama will probably travel Westjet, those going to Big White or Sun Peaks will probably go with Air Canada.

Sending Your Prized Possession Away?
We get it, we are parents too and will always place this before business. Deep down this, maybe is one of the reasons you have chosen us. Accidents do happen, things do go wrong and yes there isn’t much we haven’t already dealt with. So whilst we cannot stem Mum’s tears at the airport. We can say that we will do everything we can to keep your son or daughter comfortable whilst they are out there.
We will give you some instructions on getting in touch with WSC in the event you have a family emergency, situation in the UK or there is an emergency in resort.
There will be a representative in the UK and Canada that you will be able to get in touch with 24hrs days a week. We will let you know nearer the time who to call. All we can say is do not hesitate to get in touch if you urgently need help at any time of the day or night.
Emergencies
Resort reps are in resort and will report back to HQ. Rik is the secondary responder to deal with any emergencies, Emma is logistics. Between us we drop everything, any time of the day and get it sorted, fast, no matter what.

Health Declaration Form
Can all parents or Guardians please make sure you fill out our Health Declaration form. An example of this is seen here. You will be sent this independently and it will remain private between the WSC reps and yourselves. Should we, at the time deem this important to divulge this information then it will be shared with the Snow School Manager & Emergency Services. This information will be removed from our files after they leave the resort and finish the season.
Please Note: If you have concerns about your previous health condition or if you are a guardian, your son/daughters previous condition, now is the time to let us know of any mental or physical matters that maybe arise during your/their time out in resort or the lead up to flying out.
Pre-warned is pre-armed- and we very much encourage you to come forward to discuss any potential situations that could occur that we can be best prepared for.

If you are a little more worldly wise and self sufficient then we understand you are probably not going to be in the above category. We will however still need some next of kin details before you come out in case of an accident. We shall politely ask you to provide these details at a later date. We will also need you to fill out our Health Declaration Form, which again will be emailed to you directly.

A Note to Parents – Wellbeing, Support & Communication
We want to reassure you that we take the wellbeing and safety of our clients seriously. Our resort representatives are fully briefed on their responsibilities and will carry out regular check-ins to monitor how participants are settling in and progressing throughout the season. We update these each year as new situations stress test our existing protocols.
Each year, more young people are arriving with learning differences or mental health challenges such as ADD, dyslexia, anxiety, or similar conditions. This is increasingly common- and not something we shy away from. We are here to support where we can.
However, it’s important to be clear: we can only help if we know in advance. If your son or daughter is managing a condition- whether diagnosed or not- we ask that you let us know. We don’t need labels; we need to understand what kind of support might be required, how serious the situation is, and what the likely trigger points could be. There are a multitude of small logistical changes in the background that we would make based on what we know in advance. Transitions such as arrival, exam periods, or moments of high pressure can be tough, and the more we know, the better we can plan.
While we pride ourselves on being responsive, empathetic, and proactive, we are not trained therapists, counsellors, or medical professionals. Our pastoral care is genuine and grounded in experience- but it is not a substitute for clinical support where that is truly needed.
We say this with care: please think carefully about whether this environment is the right fit for your son or daughter at this time, and share anything you feel we should be aware of. If you are wondering right now whether you should mention something or not, then its probably a sign that you should. A transparent conversation before departure can make all the difference to how the season goes- for them, and for us. The earlier this happens the better.
