A Message From the Director

Big Thanks From the Wintersports Team

First of all thank you for choosing us and trusting us with your Internship, it means a lot to us and we hope to do everything we can to make it a trip you will remember forever.

Why we do this?

Thats easy.  You trust us with a relatively small slice of your life, a large portion of your savings and what is, to date, maybe one of the most significant decisions of your life so far. Now, we consider ourselves privileged to try and turn that into one of the best memories you’ll ever have.

Which, if you think about it, is pretty cool. Don’t you think?

It just so happens, we also put together some of the best instructor courses in Canada.

However, we will be the first to admit we aren’t perfect, there are a lot of moving parts to your Internship, and we may miss some of your emails or, at times, be a little slow to reply. We apologise in advance and encourage you to just pick up the phone and call us if that is the case.  We are always here to chat and you have permission to pester us if you need some attention from the Winter Sports Office!

Enjoy the Summer & we very much look forward to meeting you all in due course.

Kind regards

Rik

Director of the WSC.

What Happens Next?

If you are reading this then you have paid the full deposit of £1300. Consider yourself going to Canada IF you continue to successfully complete the visas tasks ON TIME.

Please remind yourself of the payment terms and refunds policy within our Terms & Conditions here.

You are going to start to receive regular emails with links to our most popular onboarding material, some of this is encased in Blog format & Knowledge Base, and some are as long web pages and some simply as emails. Either way this journey is designed to give you as much knowledge and help to get fully prepared for the winter season ahead. It’s always a work in progress and we are tweaking this material every year to try to give you more in depth knowledge on coming out to Canada.

May we come to an agreement? Your dealing with a smaller bespoke company, not some faceless giant with unqualified individuals at the helm. So we are available to help by email or phone, and encourage you to get in touch if you are stuck. But as a polite reminder- we really like our weekends like everyone else and would appreciate any questions or advice needed to be requested during the working week, but if you have an urgent situation then by all means call us directly and speak to one of the team. Our contact details are in the information on this page. Whilst we are knowledgable in most departments we do have our specialities. So please note who deals with what information so that you get the right answer from the right person. May we please remind you at this stage to check our general FAQ’s as there are a LOT of your questions answered right there. Or on this webpage with more specific “People Also Ask” sections.

Don’t worry you don’t have a mountain of tasks to complete but there are some which stand out as important, we have compiled some information for you to read and understand what to do for each task. Please make sure you carry these out as the main 3 tasks are vitally important so that you arrive at the airport feeling fully prepared. Some are essential, like visas, flights, insurance, some are just important like equipment, travel cards, clothing, Bolt Ons.

All need dealing with. Some admittedly are more fun than others, but remember….. don’t leave your homework till the end.

We recommend that you save the email with the link in your favourite tabs/webpages.  as its a private page just for you and not easily found online.  It is your hub for all things related to your course and will be updated as time goes on or things change. You will be notified by email and sent reminders from time to time but always refer back to this area for what to do next. If you haven’t already done so join us on our social feed for alerts and info.

Well, have you saved that email yet? Go on do it now before you forget! Here is the Internship Onboarding Page, put it in your Favourites tab now.

You may or may not have been asked to arrange a time for an interview for your Internship. (If you haven’t already received an email regarding this then please ask us. Only those going to Fairmont will be waiting for their interview notices.) Each resort does this differently, at their discretion. It’s usually a light hearted discussion but take it seriously as its one of the 3 essential things you need to do, to secure your position as a Snow School employee. We will help you prepare but do your part and be punctual, organised and treat it as a job interview. They are going to be your new employers.

Depending on what method you have chosen, you should have either set up a standing order to pay off the rest of your course and informed us of the payments or intend to pay a final lump sum 8 weeks prior to flying. If you are paying in instalments please let us know what your intentions are. All monies need to be paid in advance of flying. For those paying the final 8 week lump sum, we will be reminding you of this final payment nearer the time. Please ensure you have insurance in place before you do this!

Once you have dealt with this lot you should be good to go and we very much look forward to meeting you. A WSC team rep will be with you from start to finish and there to help guide you if needed.  You are part of the WSCollective now, so enjoy the benefits of choosing us and enjoy the rest of the summer…….

This is where it starts to feel real.

Going Forward….

My biggest bit of advice right now is this. Most of you have dealt with this admirably and efficiently, some have chosen to leave this to your parents and not been involved at all, a few normally have been so tied up with work, life or studies to really get a grasp on whats involved.

This Onboarding is a really important process of your trip and we find that the more you take control at this stage the more prepared you are and the less surprises there are on d-day. We find that the time between having that initial phone call and actually turning up to the resort, is actually quite a long time and some of you understandably have forgotten what has or hasn’t been offered in your package. Its normal for the odd one of you to forget which resort they have chosen.

Refresh Your Expectations

It’s sometimes important for us to manage people expectations along the way and politely remind everyone what you are getting within your programme. Sometimes it’s really hard to rectify any misunderstandings at that late stage. So please the best place to start is to take the time to re-read your quote,  then any further information flowing your way like the knowledge base information, the blogs, and write any down any questions you have.

We hope that this central hub and any subsequent phone calls or emails will be a good reminder and assist along the way.

A Lot Of Moving Parts

We have a few people behind the scenes helping us run the WSC. They can be found under the About Us section. Otherwise, by now you should know Emma & Rik, who keep things ticking along while our remote team members deal with you in the resort. You will get to know our UK team (Rob & Abbie) over the next few weeks as they help us to keep things rolling along smoothly as possible. They may contact you from time to time.

We don’t pay full-time employees. We don’t have expensive offices or large overheads. We call in and work very closely with experts to complete their tasks when the time is right and release them when they aren’t needed.

Think Of Us As The Conductors In An Orchestra

Thankfully I don’t fly your plane, or cook your food, we don’t own the accommodation, and we certainly don’t teach you to ski. We leave all this to the experts.

We leave them to do what they do best whilst we do what we do best: implementing the best instructor training programs available.
The benefit of this is you get professionals both on and off the slopes when it matters the most, we can then offer our courses cheaper than everyone else! Giving you the best bang for your buck with all our efforts aimed at you.

We will support you from your first, tentative steps as a qualified instructor through to specialising in one of our advanced programmes. Remember there have been hundreds of interns before you, and those lucky individuals have had the time of their lives, and the best part….

Now it’s your turn

The Big 3

We have compiled lots of information for you to go through should you feel the need. Please pay particular attention to these 3 main things as without dealing with them you are not going to Canada:

  • The Visas Section– if you are still trying to obtain your visa!
  • The Insurance Section– We have made some suggestions, use the links below to find the right one.
  • The Documentation & Travel Section– Information on the collection of documents that you will need to pass through Immigration, start your training, secure your accommodation & more.*  In addition to this, regardless of whether you are flying with us or getting your own and meeting us there you might want to take note of the information provided in this section. This is updated during the lead up to the 8 week mark.

Documentation & Travel Info

It’s obvious but lets make sure you are all set and ready to go with the information you need. Flight information will be sent out when ready. It important you check this information carefully when you receive the details.

Additionally this is useful information pertaining to your documents that you either need for entering Canada or being allowed to start your course. This section is updated each year, so keep an eye out for updates or new links as the departure date approaches. You will be notified if new ones are added.

You will be asked to read important legal documents and in most cases sign them and send them back to us.

IEC Working Holiday Visa

The Visa Journey

As you very well know by now they’re needed for any internship and we are here to assist you in getting the correct one for your season on the slopes. Some of you are still in the process of this so for convenience here is the information again, that you have been given so far.

Please take your time lines seriously and do not miss out on any deadlines as in most cases this will result in having to start all over again, which can in some years mean that you can forget going to Canada as an Intern as the chances of getting a visa become low.

Apart from Part 2 of the Guide which you can find here, there are also a few blogs to read to give you some back ground knowledge on the Electronic Travel Authorisation for those who do not get a visa and what it will allow you to do.

Do I Need a Visa to do a Snowboard or Ski Instructor Course?

People Also Ask

What is an eTA?

It is an Electronic Travel Authorisation and the easiest document to obtain from the Canadian Immigration Department.  It will allow you to travel to Canada for up to 180 days at a time before forced to leave, it spans over a duration of 5 years but will not allow you to work.

Do I need an eTA?

Yes you do but don’t worry its automatically attached to your IEC working Holiday Visa if you have received your POE. So you do not need to apply for one separately, unless you fail to get a working visa. In which case you need to apply for an eTa directly.

What is a POE?

A POE is a Port of Entry letter and is sent to you electronically. This is considered your visa and will need to be shown at immigration for the final decision on being let in.

Do I need to do anything after my Biometrics?

Nope that’s it! Unless they send you a message requesting more information there are no more tasks to complete, but keep checking your portal for messages from the IEC or your POE letter.

Is this actually my visa?

Until you get to the immigration desk its the closest thing to a visa. However the final paperwork will be done at the visa desk upon arrival. But DO NOT LEAVE THE AIRPORT, till you have seen the immigration department in the VISA HALL upon arriving. If you leave the airport without getting your visa activated you will not be legally allowed to work…..and no you cannot return through immigration.

What if I havent received my Police Check in time?

You can upload your proof of purchasing (receipt) the ACRO which will suffice until they ask for the certificate, once your certificate arrives upload this via a webform. Remember all documents must be uploaded then submitted to the IEC. Careful that you don’t just upload it and forget to submit it!

Do I need a medical report?

Even though you are working with kids you are not required to have a medical certificate unless specifically asked by the IEC. So do not tick the box requesting one. Only teachers and care workers need to have one, not those on an internship. Some nationalities maybe asked to provide one but UK, Australian, New Zealand and most European residents need not apply.

What if my passport runs out before the visa does?

We strongly recommend that you have a full two years on your passport prior to entering Canada.
The immigration officer will only give you a visa for the amount of time your current passport is valid for. However unlike not having a long enough insurance policy you can extend this. Order a new passport and ask for an extension of your visa to the 2 year mark. (assuming your insurance is still valid) You can transfer your visa over to the new passport, but if you have the opportunity its much less hassle to pre-empt this and get your passport renewed nice and early so that this doesn’t become a chore during your time out in Canada.

What if I have applied for a visa on one passport but recently ordered a new one?

Take both passports with you to immigration/visa department. They will recognise this and put your visa into the new passport upon arrival.

Why did I only get a 6 month visa allowance when I entered Canada?

The Immigration officer will only give you the length of visa that your insurance covers.

Can I extend my visa once i’ve entered Canada?

No you cannot change this once issued. It is a once in a lifetime allowance on this IEC visa. So take the full 2 years insurance policy.
Think about this EXTREMELY carefully. You will feel different at the end of your time in Canada and all candidates that have opted for a short visa/insurance policy have regretted it.

How long does it take to get through immigration and our visa process?

Depending on the airport and day of arrival you can get caught up in the queues for 3-4hrs or be through in a breeze and be loading your bags on the bus in 1.5hrs time.

What should I expect upon arrival?

After landing you need to queue to see the immigration officer and then queue for your visa activation prior to leaving the airport. MAKE SURE YOU TELL IMMIGRATION- “I need to process my working visa where do I need to go?”
Once you have your visa, depending on your flight plans, you can catch your connecting flight or collect your bags, meet up with the group in arrivals and prepare to board the bus to your final destination.

How do I activate my visa if I get it late?

If you have entered on an eTA and didn’t have your POE upon arrival then you will need to leave the country to activate your visa when it does arrive. This can be done by flying outside of Canada and back in again or by Flag-poling.

What is Flagpoling?

It usually involves a day trip, hiring a car or taking a bus and driving to a border town on the US state line or an airport with American ownership such as Cranbrook or an equivalent and clocking out of Canada and back in again and activating your visa.

If I have my visa am I legal to work?

Not on its own. You also need to register with a Canada Service Center and obtain your SIN number which is a fairly painless process and requires your visa and passport. Once you have this document then any employer can legally employ and pay you.

IEC Insurance

Do Your Due Diligence!

Insurance is an essential purchase when taking part in a ski season. Not only is it a prerequisite in our terms and conditions, but you also don’t want a hefty bill if something goes wrong. We break down the sorts of questions you should be asking insurance providers and our recommendations for winter sports coverage so you get the most for your £.

People Also Ask

When Do Most People Get Insurance?

Most people decide to get insurance before they pay the full amount 8 weeks before flying. However remember you can always get a single trip insurance policy and be covered from the date you pay for your policy not just the date you fly.

What is the bare minimum you suggest spending?

Policy premiums change every year of course and there are policies which can be found around £700 for a year. However we suggest an absolute minimum of £900 is around the right mark for insurance for a 2 year policy. If we had the chance though, we would force everyone into the £1200 policies but each to their own of course!

“I might just get insurance to cover my winter “

It will be the biggest mistake of your life if you do not get a full 2 year policy to allow the immigration officer to give you a full two year visa. Trust us on this one! We can tell everyone till we are blue in the face and every year someone thinks otherwise. How you feel now is not how you will feel 6 months from now. We guarantee it!

What does my insurance need to cover?

It needs to cover medical, repatriation, cancellation & curtailment. It must also cover you for winter sports both on piste and off piste but within resort boundaries which are patrolled in Canada. (considered different in Europe)
Anything else is up to you, equipment, belongings. Also think about do you want a family member to fly out in case of emergencies?

Toptip: Base your insurance policy on this question? “How much money do I want to recover in case I get injured and need to fly home?” What ever that amount is in the policy, if you are happy recovering that amount then the rest of the policy shoudl fall into place satisfactorily.

Do I specifically need winter sports insurance?

If you are skiing or snowboarding then YES. Decide if you are going to be sking or riding in the park and get coverage for this too. Each policy is different. Are you planning on backcountry and going outside of resort boundaries or heliskiing? In which case you might need additional insurance nearer the time. This can be added to your existing policy or purchase a seperate policy for the day(s)

Will I be insured to work at the resort?

Not on your policy but you will on the employers insurance policy. All employees are covered by Worksafe BC
Your personal insurance will cover you for your time off.

Can you check my policy and advise me what is best?

No sorry. Please check your policy carefully as we are not brokers and cannot legally advise you. All we can do is suggest which providers have been good to previous clients. You must do your own due diligence. We have previously sent you documentation covering as must information as we legally can without over stepping the mark.

What happens if I get injured?

Depending on the severity of the injury, you will be sent to Ski Patrol who will assess your injury and deal with the injury or stabilse you, consisting of either patching you up and a pat on the back then calling you a taxi to the hospital or in some cases calling an ambulance or air ambulance.

A WSC rep will be notified by Ski Patrol or alerted by one of the clients. We shall assist where we can but please be aware there are lots of people in resort which require our presence at times. If it is possible and we can do so we will transport the client to the local hospital or arrange a taxi. Some reps do not necessarily have transportation.
We will make sure the patient is stable, looked after and not distressed. Then help with informing the insurance company and if asked the family member.
WSC will remain the go-to between injured person-insurance company and guardian for as long as needed or required.

How far away are the hospitals?

Sun Peaks has a good medical center at the base of the slopes. The main hospital is in Kamloops & Kelowna. Which are 40mins to 2hrs away.

Panorama has a hospital in Invermere which is 25 mins away but the main hospital is in Cranbrook which is 2hrs away.

Serious medical emergencies may involve being sent to Kelowna.

What if I get injured before I fly or Day 1 and cannot attend the course on time?

It happens! If you are injured at home or injured on the ski lift or worse and slip on the pavement and that injury prevents you from starting or completing the training then you will be given a resonable amount of time to recover but if you miss too much training then you will forfeit the internship and have to decide whether you fly home and recover your money from the insurance company or stay in Canada, pay rent and recover on your own time. In which case we need to discuss what WSC can do to salvage your goals and gap year dreams.

Please Note: We have in the past transferred the die hards over to an 8 week Fast Track course in January to allow their injuries to improve but this is at an extra cost. Please note your internship course fees have been allocated and cannot be transfered to other courses or other years. It is also worthy to note that whilst you will be covered medically, you cannot claim off your insurance for curtailment or cancellation if you decide to stay out in resort!

Affiliate Membership to CSIA

For those doing a Level 1 & 2 Standard Internship and do not have any previous certifications with other governing bodies, then the WSC will be paying for your CSIA or CASI membership when you pass your Level 1 exams this winter.

If you have a Level 1 or Level 2 in another governing body (not CSIA) and you are intending to do a Level 2 or 3 Internship with us, please use this link to get your Affiliate Membership. We are not responsible for this cost nor updating your membership. You must have this Affiliate membership in place BEFORE flying to Canada.

People Also Ask

When is my actual internship considered completed?

Once you start work for the resort you transfer from a WSC Intern and reach the lofty status of an employee of the resort. At this point your internship has finished and you are an employee, all disputes regarding your employment need to be brought up with your employer. If you feel we can assist or the dispute is a disagreement with the WSC then please bring this up with us immediately and not at the end of your time in Canada when we cannot rectify the issue.

What is Dayforce?

Dayforce is the app which all employees use to coordinate their work time, hours paid and other employee information. We do not have access to this. You will be onboarded with Employee experience after completing your Level 1.

How much work should i expect?

Standard Interns: When you work for the resort you will be rostered on and get approximately 20hrs of work per week on average across the season, some weeks a little less, some weeks a little more. This work will predominantly be instructor work on slope, however if the resort is having a quiet week they may on rare occasions ask you to do some other duties in and around the resort.

Hybrid Interns: You have a part time position with the snowschool and will expect to earn around $2500 over the entire season. It is not guaranteed like any work however this is a comfortable estimation.

Who is in charge of what?

Good question, WSC have put this programme together and the resort administrate it. We are in charge of your off slope logistics. The Ski & Ride Managers are in charge of your training, your work load and on slope logistics.

If you are unsure simply ask us and if you have a grumble or something isn’t to your expectations then pull us aside and have a quiet word, if we can sort it we will.

What does WSC NOT get involved with?

You have to remember anything to do with your employment is between you and your employer. You change from an WSC Intern to a Ski Resort employee once you successfully pass your Level 1 and start your Staff training. We cannot get involved with individual disputes unless the issue is specifically affecting the Internship as a whole. Nor can we tell how the Ski Schools to run their business. Likewise they would not tell us how to run ours. So please bare this in mind. We are obviously here to offer advice and you can lean on us for support. We will always try to help where we can.

Where am I staying when at Sun Peaks?

Initially you are staying at the Cahilty Lodge Hotel, then (Level 1 Interns) after your Level 1 exams you move down to staff accommodation which is normally the Burfield Hostal.

Level 2 & 3 Interns move earlier as you have less time at the Cahilty.

Where am I staying when At Panorama or Fairmont Hot Springs?

You are initially staying in resort in the lower village at Panorama Mountain Village. Around the 3 week mark you move to staff accommodation which is pre organised for you in Invermere. All Hybrid & Standard Interns are staying in Windermere Pointe Apartments in Invermere.

Who do I share a room with?

Initially you will be sharing with people of similar age and same gender in your bedroom. However some condos might be mixed gender as they have more than one bedroom. Initially WSC choose who goes with who whilst in training. After that at Panorama we let the clients chose which cohort they want to share with when in staff accommodation.

I don’t get on with my roommate, what can I do?

I’ve been putting crews together for over 20 years. Sometimes I get it wrong but normally we manage to pair everyone up fairly well. One pair are actually getting married this year!

However we cannot get it right all the time. If you simply aren’t getting on then come and chat with us quietly one afternoon and we shall see if we can move you. This isn’t always possible but we do understand and try to make it happen.

Those going to Sun Peaks can suggest who they want to share with when moving to staff accommodation but need to do so early or it will be organised for you as you are staying in designated Sun Peaks staff accommodation and we have less say over this matter.

Documentation & Travel Information

Flights:

Don’t panic about your flights if you are coming with the WSC. All will be dealt with in due course and you will be sent the flight details between 4-8 weeks before flying.

In the meantime Emma is on hand to answer any questions regarding the flights and travel process. Your quote should have the preliminary flight date, with arrival and departure airport name.

Please Note: When you receive the flight information immediately check that the details are the same as in your passport. These mistakes cannot be rectified easily if missed and will be considered a change at your expense should any charges be incurred.

Updates Here:

All things considered you will be required to fill out a few more forms and sign some documents as time rolls on, so ensure that you collect bits of paperwork as you go along.

We suggest getting a folder at this stage to keep everything together and be a central point of storing your information from insurance to lift pass waivers, to passport pdf’s.

Try to have paper copies of vital information in case your digital copies get lost. You will be notified by email if a new link is placed here. When the resorts have updated their documentation and forward them to us then we and add it here.

People Also Ask

What happens if I am getting my own flight?

Make sure you are very thorough in getting approval from us before booking your flight. We need to ensure that you are arriving at a suitable time to meet the group and travel on the same transportation provided. We suggest getting a flexible ticket so you can make changes should you or we need to.p0

What if my flight is late and i miss connecting with the main group?

Make some plans to find accommodation if you need to. As soon as you know you are going to be late, alert the person who is in charge of the group so we can plan accordingly. We will help arrange alternative transportation to the resort but this will be at your expense.

Which documents are needed at immigration?

You need your passport, photo ID, proof of insurance, Port of Entry letter and a copy of your flight details. (tickets issed at the airport)

What media format do these documents need to be available in?

Batteries run out! Take paper and digital copies of everything and tag, pin or save these in an easily accesible place on your laptop, phone or tablet.
Carry a folder for all your paper copies in your carry on bag.

Do I need to have my tickets posted to me or available for download?

Your tickets will be available at the airport.

What is my baggage allowance?

With the WSC flights you have one carry on bag, one computer bag or equivalent. One hold bag, One ski/board bag and a boot bag allowance with your flights. More precise information on weight limitations can be found on the airlines baggage allowance webpage and/or on your ticket.
Depending on which airline we fly with your boot bag and ski bag weight limitation maybe combined.

What if I need to book more baggage?

At the time of writing, this usually has to be added at the airport on the day.You simply turn up early and go to the airlines desk or check in area and pay for this directly. Currently it has not been possible to add this to your booking unless stated in advance, hence paid for separately.

Who, when and where do we normally meet?

Usually in the airport at Costas or a similar venue nice and early. Our rep or Director will be there to greet you and help you get checked in. We will be there 4 hrs before the flight and will remain around check in till we cannot wait any longer. Somebody will be flying out to resort with you.

What happens when we land in Canada?

We will all be queuing up to first fill out some electronic forms, take a print out and see the immigration officer to explain our reason for entry. You will be asked some simple questions, before being let through. If you are unsure please ask them where to go next to get your work visa activated. DO NOT get guided into a direction that is different to what the immigration officer told you. It is extremely important that you remain in the area to process your visa before picking up your bags. Once you have passed through into arrivals there is no turning back to sort your visa out.

What if I don’t agree with something on the forms?

We are always on hand to discuss anything that you have concerns about or disagree with. Some of these forms are not created by us and you will subjected to the same terms as everyone else working in resort or using the slopes. These documents are sometimes governed by Canadian provincial law or local to the resorts owning company. If you have any disagreements please write to us by email and bring this to our attention at the time.

Which airport do we fly from?

If you are one of our UK clients or joining the main group in London, then we normally fly out from Gatwick or Heathrow.

What if I am too late to meet the group?

Sometimes clients fly in much later than the main group. In which case you will have to pay a supplement charge for us to organise individual transportation to catch up. This will be added to your quote or charged independently.

Is the name on your quote the same in your passport?

Check your quote, make sure that your name is spelt correctly and how it is on your passport. This is the name we will be using for your flights. So its important to get it changed NOW if its not right!

Training Programme & Pre Course Material

What Happens Next?

After a days orientation, collecting your lift pass and sorting out your equipment we get down to business pretty quickly. So here is a run down of what to expect. If you have any questions regarding your training then send Rik an email or WhatsApp.

Professional coaching is provided 4 days a week, typically from Monday to Friday. Although its up to the Snow School and their shedule. Weekends can be spent shadowing ski school, free-skiing or ticking off one your chosen Bolt-Ons.

People Also Ask

Will the training schedule change?

Very likely, the example shown is indicative and not cast in stone. The resort reserve the right to alter the training days if need be, however these changes are minor and you will be informed by your trainers or by WSC.

How many hours training per week should I expect?

You will receive a minimum of 20hrs per week? Its enough trust us, you need time to recover from jetlag, time to get your ski legs and time to chill out. Free skiing is allowed on your days off. Panorama is the exception where you will not be allowed to free ski until the resort is officially open to the public, (2 weeks into your internship) till then all skiing and riding is done within the days training.

How long is my Level 1 training for?

You will complete your exams in the 3rd week of being in resort.
Further training may happen after this exam either straight away following successful completion of your exams or during quiet periods, some are offered as bolt ons, some as Snow school onboarding and staff training.

When do I get time off?

Training days are run differently at each resort according to the resorts Snow School Ski & Ride Manager. Days off will be given, usually the first 3 weeks are reasonably intense so time is limited initially as we need to get you all instructor ready for the general public arriving.

Who are my trainers?

Your trainers are either long term level 3 instructors for the CSIA/CASI or Level 4’s. All have a minimum of 8 years instructing. They are tried and tested trainers who are very adept at keeping you on the edge of your comfort zone so that you neither get too tired and injure yourself nor conversely switch off and become bored.

Get as much as you can from these fantastic skiers and boarders as they will be really keen to share their knowledge. It may not be until much later that you really understand how lucky you are to share this time with these people. They are at the top of their game.

On another note they maybe your future mentor or employer so if you get the chance buy them a coffee or beer and keep them sweet!

What extra training will I get?

Interns may be asked to do one more 3 day training programme to be eligible for some season long programmes which are based around All Mountain Programmes or Canadian Adaptive Snowsports or Race Coach programmes. You will all undergo 1-2 days of staff training after your exams.

How much Level 2 training will I get at as a Standard Intern?

If you are at Panorama or Fairmont Hot Springs and on a standard Internship then you get 8 days dedicated Level 2 training.

If you are going to Sun Peaks you will get 5 days dedicated Level 2 training.

Both resorts also offer staff training most mornings or a designated half day per week. This method of delivery changes each year.

How much Level 2 training will I get as a Hybrid Intern?

You will receive a whopping 16 days Level 2 training if you are on our Hybrid programme.

Are my Level 2 modules & exams included in my Internship?

If it says this on your quote then yes they are.

What is the duration of my CASI Level 2 snowboarding course?

Its a 4 day exam with a CASI conductor.

What is the duration of my CSIA Level 2 skiing course?

It is a combination of a 2 day Teach module, a 2 day Ski module and a 2 day Exam.

When does my Level 2 training start?

It will start from mid January onwards, during quieter times. It is spread over a few weeks so it doesn’t interfere with your work schedule.

Turning Up Fit

If you are planning on getting fit out there, then forget it. Some of you will have never experienced a winter season in Canada. It takes it out of you in so many ways and you need to be physically prepared.

“Our advice is to turn up fit not get fit out there.”

Our courses and internships enable you to ride all day long, but it’s easy to forget how exhausting skiing and boarding is on the body. Building your strength and endurance will allow you to ride for long periods, and gives you a baseline to improve.

Strengthening your muscles and improving your flexibility can reduce the risk of common skiing injuries, such as ACL tears or fractures.  More so, proper nutrition and adequate hydration supports muscle recovery and repair, allowing you to perform at your best on consecutive days.

So to fuel yourself and avoid burnout, have a look at our fitness and nutrition guide, created by Abbie, our Sports Therapist, qualified Nutrition Coach, keen skier & boarder.

People Also Ask

Why do I need to get fit?

Lots of reasons:
1. Get more out of your training
2. Recover faster
3. Keep your stamina up
Please do not expect to get fit out there, there are too many distractions and its much better for your experience if you start a training programme now!

When should I start the 8 week fitness programme?

Now. Not next week, not after my birthday, not on Bank Holiday Monday, not when your star sign is aligned with Uran…Just start. We’ve put a free 8 week programme together, its currently under a revamp but for now the format will give you some ideas.
My best advice is not to skip leg day and concentrate on legs, knees, ankles, core and flexibility. So in a nutshell cross-fit style training, Yoga and Squats.
Have fun!

What if I get injured and cannot work?

Then you don’t get paid. So the quicker you recover the better.

Wrapping up Warm

“If you are wearing more than 5 layers then you are doing it wrong”

Getting the right clothing for the job is vitally important in order to enjoy your time on and off the slopes.

The average temperature in interior BC sits around the minus ten mark, and there will be a few colder snaps throughout the season. Especially when it hits those minus 20 to 30 days, you’ll thank your previous self for investing in quality gear. From base to mid to outer layers, we run through what you should be looking for when buying gear for the slopes. So although vintage gear looks cool, it won’t keep you warm – save it for Spring skiing!

Team Clothing

It’s not essential that you turn up looking like a battle hardened mountain pro, but you do want to choose something functional, warm and comfortable. We cannot stress enough, getting cold or being uncomfortable tires your body quickly and takes the enjoyment out of the day.

Stellar do not substitute function for the latest fashion. In our opinion the quality to price ratio far outweighs more fashion orientated brands such as Arcteryx, Northface or Helly Hansen.
So take it from us, these guys at Stellar not only know how to make you look great, they are also experts at keeping you warm on the mountain. Put it this way – if Stellar made duvets, you would never get out of bed.

We do not get any discounts so what you see on their website is what we pay. So shop direct. Then if you want it branded just let us know. Stellar Equipment

People Also Ask

Where do you recommend me buying my clothing?

Up to you, the GBP£ is strong against the dollar at time of writing so its cheaper in Canada and lots of gear out there. However those going to Sun Peaks will have less opportunity to shop, whereas those going to Panorama or Fairmont Hot Springs will have some opportunity to go shopping. Otherwise buy in the UK a mix of Snow & Rock, Ellis Brigham, Decathalon, Mountain Warehouse, StellarEquipment.

What is hard shell and soft shell ski gear?

Soft shell clothing is where you have an outer weather proof layer attached to a thermal layer within. A hard shell is a layering method where these two elements are seperate garments. Acheived with a hard shell wind and water proof jacket and pants and a separate down jacket underneath.

What are the most important items of clothing?

Gloves, down jacket, good socks and a full face snood.

What temperatures can it reach it Canada?

There is usually a period where it can reach over -25-30, you may not be teaching on these days but training may occur if really necessary in short spurts in between lots of hot chocolate and cafe stops.
If the conditions are worse or considered dangerous then only the lower parts of the mountain will be accessed or simply closed for those few days. This is an unfortunate event and obviously outside of everyones control but will affect your work hours during that period.

Is a uniform provided?

You wear your own ski gear for training, but you will be given a uniform for when you are working, this consists of ski jacket and pants and usually an inner gilet and snood. You need to provide your own boots, helmet, goggles, gloves and inner layers at all times.

The fun part, unless your a parent…..

Equipment

What Should I be Using?

Directly from those in the industry, Harry and Sam give their insight about the best skis, boards and boots for working as an instructor. Ski shops can be a little overwhelming, and it’s easy to just go with what looks aesthetic. But working as an instructor requires you to have versatility, as often your morning and afternoon lessons are drastically different in terms of student skills and snow conditions. The morning could have you chasing powder in the back bowls with a few keen riders looking to progress, or you could be up and down the magic carpet holding the hands of a toddler. No lesson looks the same, and you should have gear that suits all conditions, and that may mean owning multiple skis or boards. Harry and Sam are seasoned season-aires and are willing to share their tips when buying.

When doing these courses, you should ensure you have an 74-84mm  ski if you are taking your course at Sun Peaks or Panorama.

This is because learning to carve will be the main focus for most of the course and the conditions depict this width of ski, and the narrower your skis are, the easier it is to carve. Ideally around 74-80mm width is ideal for Canadian on piste carving conditions.

If you can afford two sets of skis then broaden your scope by bringing your narrow carving skis then go nice and wide for your powder skis, then you are covered for all conditions. For those park rats, then by all means bring your spare set for your days off.

As a general rule of thumb unless you really know what you are buying and why,  then getting a suitable length ski which ends somewhere between your nose and eyebrows for an All Mountain ski or chin to eye level for something easier to carve and more responsive will be a fair judgement. When you are starting off a shorter ski is preferable, if you are advanced skier or rider the longer your ski or board the more directional it will be but certainly more stable at speed.

Half  The Battle

Being on the right equipment and turning up fit in our opinion is winning half the battle before you have even started. So take our word for it when it comes to equipment.

We often have an incredibly high pass rate because we try to get everyone on the right TYPE of equipment.

You are about to invest a lot of money in your course so as a thank you we have passed on these offerings to you as a bonus of coming with the WSC. These discounts & savings are eligible to you and your family every year for as long as we own this company. Pretty cool right?

Please Note: We add a £50 handling fee to your overall order. We are offering this equipment to you at cost. Whats the catch I hear you ask?

Well we cannot afford to discuss with each and everyone of you whether these bindings are best with which skis, what boots would you get for which board, what helmet do I think is best? Are these poles long enough?

In other words if you want us to be the retail attendant then we will charge retail prices.  Sound fair?

We have deals coming in over the next few weeks and will update this area as and when they do. They have been chosen because they are good for your Level 1 & 2 Instructor Course. Until we do please check out these blogs to help you with your choice or simply to improve your knowledge.

Ellis Brigham Discount

Take a photo of this and keep it on your phone. (Ignore the expiry date!) Its a good discount with Ellis Brigham and they have stores up and down the country. There are pros and cons to buying through them, they have a good selection of boots but you are risking the fitting being right and not getting it rectified in resort as openly as you would if you bought it from them.

Getting Paid

You need to be able to spend your savings, or wage and obviously you want to keep in touch with friends and family back home and share all the memories you’re making. Here’s a run through of how to manage your money abroad, what we suggest is the best way to receive your pay cheques and whether you should buy a Canadian sim card.

The Best Prepaid Travel Cards

Our Advice on Canadian Sim Cards

WISE Debit Card: I have been travelling for many years now and the card I have found to be the easiest, cheapest, most transparent with conversion charges etc is this bank, it’s one card with as many currencies as you like. Takes less than 10 mins to sign up and make sure you apply for the debit card. Do it early as it takes a while to arrive. (7-14 days) Not saying its the best but I have no complaints and its easy for you and your family to top up and save on bank fees!!
Interns: It also accepts Canadian currency which is vital.  So if you decide to go for something different make sure you have this ability with your travel card to accept Canadian currency into a Canadian bank account only

Disclaimer: We have with the assistance of the resorts and their respective HR departments found a travel card which actually has a registered Canadian bank account and accepts payments which the HR departments use. Whilst there maybe other cards which do so, we cannot and will not guarantee that any other card will work. Sorry but in the mantra of “if its not broken don’t fix it” we are not prepared to continue to investigate other cards and take up anymore time testing the system with these 3rd parties. If you use any other card as an Intern at any resort then you do so at your own risk. Failure to be able to accept payments into some of these banking systems will require you to open a Canadian bank account which takes considerable effort and expense.

Set Up A Wise Card
Set Up A Wise Card

People Also Ask

Do I need a travel card?

Yes you should otherwise you will feel the financial pinch every time to use your native currency card.

Can I not just use my bank card?

We suggest Wise for all our interns. As mentioned before this bank card has been tried and tested and approved. So keep things simple.

Will I have the opportunity to get a local SIM card?

You will in the first week have time to get a sim card. However Sun Peaks clients will end up with less opportunity as the nearest town is 40 mins away and a little expensive to get there. So try to get something at the airport in Vancouver or in resort if need be. Sussing what you want in advance is a good idea. Panorama clients live 20 mins from town and its easy to get down there on your day off, but regardless of which resoret you are in your first 3 weeks are limited for time off so have some data on your phone as back up. Read the blogs for ideas.

What does everyone use to stay in touch out there?

We all use Whats App in the lead up to the internship and during your training. WSC and Trainers will post on the WhatsApp groups which will be set up in advance of you heading out.

When can we all start chatting?

Usually we get the groups set up mid October. Then you can chat till your hearts content

Will there be wifi in and around resort?

Yes there are areas where you can get wifi but its slow, so please make sure you have something already on your account set up so you can stay in touch with home and your fellow peers. EE and Vodafone sometimes do great roaming packages that you can take away with you.

Tension building….

Packing & Preparation

There’s quite a few things to do before you embark on your adventure of a lifetime, from organising visas to insurance to equipment. But let’s go through to calm the anxiety that may be creeping in. Trust us, it’s not as overwhelming as it seems if you break it down.

Kit List. What to Bring.

Here is a preliminary kit list. I hope this helps. We are sending out an email and giving options on all the equipment for the winter in regards to skis, board, bindings poles etc so if you hang on you might get some good deals.

Some of the days can get down to -30 or colder. Its not uncommon to see -20 days so make sure you layer properly. Getting frostbite on the ski lift is not fun. Also if you have bad circulation then seriously think about heated socks.

So onto the list.

Skis or Board
Bindings
Boots
Poles
Helmet
Goggles
Gloves- for on and off the slopes
Ski bag or board bag, & boot bag. (these items go free with Air Canada so pack them full within reason. We have great deals on board and ski bags
Tools for changing fittings
Day rucksack with or without a hydration pack. (warning: the tubes tend to freeze up)
Ski Jacket & Pants (or Salopettes) 1 set only
A very good down jacket or equivalent
Mid-layer, Merino wool or fleece jumper x 2
Fleece Joggers or equivalent. With mid-layers think easy drying, light
2 pairs of thermals
Underwear, duh
Socks
Going out clothes – Be sensible!! It’s not a fashion show guys! You’ll be living in your boots and ski/board gear so don’t go overboard.
1 x Slouchy Sunday afternoon on the sofa kind of clothing.
Scarf, or snood and or Balaclava
Boots for around resort (it gets slippy)
Sports Bras – (that was Emma’s input)
Padding/body armour or supports – if you really want or need to, not essential!
Glasses holder/toggle/spare glasses, contact lenses
Swim & Gym Gear
Sunglasses
Lip Balm/Suncream/Face cream/Moisturiser/Mongolian Yak milk (whatever you use!) It gets really dry up in the mountains so come prepared and drink lots of water.
Toiletries (Canada sockets don’t accept British electric toothbrush chargers or hairdryers)
Alcohol sanitiser
Blister packs, painkillers, any extra medication your taking
Earplugs- your roommate might snore!
A smile. Go on I dare you. There we go… Take a look at yourself in the mirror. You’re going to Canada!! this is meant to be fun, not stressful so chill out and relax into this with a big smile on your face.
Plug adaptors, cables, camera, go pros, phones, speakers or headphones,
Safety pin and paper clip – MacGyver wouldn’t leave home without them. (Also good for swapping Sim cards over)
Spare screw/bolt etc remember you are heading towards the land of Imperial measurements
Duct tape, there are 2 sides to this world; the Dark Side and the Light Side – they are both held together by Duct-tape. Great for repairing split bags clothing etc.
Scissors
Ipad or Laptop
70’s shirt, pants, dress, wig, big gigs. Essential
Small travel case/wallet for important info – certificates, passport, emergency credit cards, insurance documents, medical notes, flight info, course notes. Essentially anything worth printing as a backup to digital versions.
Wallet/purse
A cat if you have one.
PASSPORT
VISAS
INSURANCE
PHOTO ID PROOF OF AGE (the drinking age is 19, you will have to show some ID to prove your age. Please don’t use your passport for this purpose. You will end up losing it. I believe you can get IDs online to prove your age or failing that use a driving licence.
A good book/cards.
Home comforts. Favourite coffee, tea, chocolate
Im sure there are other suggestions but weighing this and a practice pack will help you decide what you need to leave behind. Like the cat, I was just joking, who brings a cat?
But a dog on the other hand…….

People Also Ask

I can’t fit all this in! What do I do?

Book another bag at the airport or decide that maybe you don’t need all that stuff and leave some behind. Just saying…

What kind of bags are best to use?

If I could say this over and over and over again then maybe just maybe one year we could get everyone using soft luggage and leaving those hard cases behind. You don’t have a lot of room to hide your luggage, soft luggage rolls up and packs away. Leaving more room for you to see the carpet for example. WSC have some great examples of strong, branded kit bags at great prices which additionally, make you look pro at the airport.

Any top tips for me?

Check out the blogs in this section and realise that, you will not need “outfits” you are not going to “nightclubs” this isn’t a fashion show. If you cannot fit what you need in the allowance and you think you need another bag, then I rethink your packing methods or dump some non-essentials.

Bring 70’s gear though!

Extra Bed-time Reading

Can’t sleep at night?

Whilst this is not vital you may want to spend some evenings going through this as it might help prepare you or jog your memory about a question you wanted to ask. Here are the remaining Blogs or Knowledge base articles that we deemed worthy of reading. They are all included here so that you do not need to trawl through the entire library.

You can of course ignore this but as you get closer to the departure date some of you need a little extra help to fall asleep in the evenings…so keep an eye on this area as we get closer. Right now concentrate on the more important tasks at hand.

Concerned…ok maybe a little

Parent Zone

Sending Your Prized Possession Away?

We get it, we are parents too and will always place this before business. Deep down this, maybe is one of the reasons you have chosen us. Accidents do happen, things do go wrong and yes there isn’t much we haven’t already dealt with. So whilst we cannot stem Mum’s tears at the airport. (and on the odd occasion Dad’s) We can say that we will do everything we can to keep your son or daughter comfortable whilst they are out there.

We will give you some instructions on getting in touch with WSC in the event you have a family emergency, situation in the UK or there is an emergency in resort.

There will be a representative in the UK and Canada that you will be able to get in touch with 24hrs days a week. We will let you know nearer the time who to call.  All we can say is do not hesitate to get in touch if you urgently need help.

Health Declaration Form

Can all parents or Guardians please make sure you fill out our Health Declaration form. An example of this is seen here. You will be sent this independently and it will remain private between the WSC reps and yourselves. Should we, at the time deem this important to divulge this information then it will be shared with the Snow School Manager & Emergency Services.  This information will be removed from our files after they leave the resort and finish the season.

For Those More Travelled

If you are a little more worldly wise and self sufficient then we understand you are probably not going to be in the above category. We will however still need some next of kin details before you come out in case of an accident. We shall politely ask you to provide these details at a later date. We will also need you to fill out our Health Declaration Form, which again will be emailed to you directly.

Well that’s it folks there isn’t much else to do other than head back to the top of the page.

Like we said we will be updating this page, and informing you by email of any additions.

Till then enjoy the Summer, save those pennies and count down the days to your big November trip.
